Parenting 101: How to Get Your House Ready to Sell

Selling your property can be incredibly stressful, and that’s without throwing under-10s and their accompanying clutter into the bargain. The trick is to create a property that people want to make their own, and sticky handprints and toys strewn across the floor usually don’t quite cut it.

Luckily, there are some simple ways to get your house show home ready, and although they require some effort on your part, they shouldn’t prove to be too exhausting. So, if you’re in need of a little inspiration, here are some ideas to help you find the perfect purchaser…

#1: Neutralise

One of the keys to selling your property is to make it a blank canvas. Potential purchasers find it far easier to envisage their belongings in your home if your own style isn’t stamped across the house, and this means that a neutral colour palette is essential. But how do you reconcile easily smeared magnolia walls and stainable cream carpets with having children in the house? The answer is simple: you invest in throws, and big, cheap rugs to cover your floors. Easy to whip out of sight whenever you have a viewing, they’ll keep your spotless new décor in perfect condition until you find a buyer.

#2: Introduce the Tidying Up Game

Every parent knows that storage boxes are a godsend, yet somehow toys still manage to end up strewn throughout your home. The answer lies in the tidying up game. Although it won’t hold its novelty for long, it’s a great way to ensure that everything is shut out of sight before your buyers take a look around. The rules are simple. When the whistle blows, every loose toy has to be packed away as quickly as possible, and the child who can put away the most mess the fastest wins a treat of your choosing. Star charts usually work well as a rewards system, and the game can prove surprisingly efficient when it comes to keeping your tiny tots occupied.

#3: Keep Your Home Clean

It’s not enough to keep your home tidy, however; it also needs to be clean. Although popping the dishes in the dishwasher after every meal can seem like a superhuman effort when you have three under-threes trailing at your heels, it helps to remind yourself that your domestic goddess routine doesn’t need to last forever. The easiest way to keep things spotless is to try and stay on top of them, and this unfortunately means that you’ll need to carry out a brief spring clean each day. Make sure that pots and pans are tidied away after every meal, little fingerprints are wiped from surfaces a soon as they smear them, and that muddy boot marks are scrubbed from the kitchen floor the second they appear.

Create your dream home and you’re sure to find your dream buyer – and the sooner you can do that, the sooner you can go back to your not-so-tidy slice of heaven.
