You all know I am partial to board games.  7 Wonders proved to be a fantastic addition to my collection.  This game has received lots of awards (over 30!).  It is a good indication of the quality of the game.  I love that up to seven people can play.  When we have a board game evening its nice that as many people as possible can join in!  It is easy to adjust setting up the game.  Just discard the cards numbered beyond the amount of people you have playing.

In this game you play a leader of one of the seven great cities.  At the beginning allocate at random a wonder card which you can try and build.  It reminds me of the Civilization game I used to love playing on my PC.  But personally, I would rather play a board game.  My kids have enough screen time playing Fortnite!!!  Quality time as a family for me does revolve around board games.  Growing up I have fond memories of all the board games my parents used to play with us.

There is a quite a lot to take in when you first play 7 Wonders.  Lots of different structure cards, military, civilian, commercial and scientific.  But you soon get the hang of it with repeated play, so don’t be put off.  The aim of the game is to have the most victory points at the end.  It is quite strategic as you decide which combination of structures will be most beneficial.

The game is made up of three ages.  Cards cost resources or gold.  If they are blank with no cost mentioned, then they are a free build!  You start the game with three coins.  But you can earn more by discarding your card rather than building a structure.  However it is a good idea to get cracking building as you want to add to your resources as much as possible.  Then you can buy more sophisticated buildings and keep developing your city.

You can spend two coins to buy a resource from one of the other players if they have it available.  You can buy raw materials so wood, ore, clay brick and stone.  Or you can buy manufactured goods such as the glass, papyrus and textiles.  This is handy if you have a structure you would like to build but are missing a vital resource.  You can’t refuse to sell a card!

How you go about obtaining victory points can be down to the players individual strategy.  You can focus on building up your military or trying to get lots of stages of your wonder completed.  If you can collect a set of scientific structures that gets you a bonus 7 points.  Naturally its hard to be good at everything so you have to make compromises.
