Last week we headed to Oakwood Theme Park for our first ever visit.  We have been to Pembrokeshire a fair few times to stay in Bluestone, so I wish we had made it more of a regular thing earlier on.  I was pleasantly surprised by how much there was to do, the selection of rides and the friendly staff.

Oakwood does have mixed reviews on tripadvisor but I would say visit and make up your own mind!  We certainly would be happy to return when we are next in the area.  The mixture of rides was good with some involving water, a few for the thrill seekers in the family and plenty for those who like things a bit more relaxed!

The weather wasn’t great, gloomy, grey and rainy!  But I guess it worked in our favour as we didn’t have much in the way of queues.  Plus, the staff worked hard keeping as many rides open as possible.  Even when it was torrential, I think it was only the Crocodile Coaster that was closed.  So, the weather didn’t get in the way of our enjoyment.

We had a pretty full day, arriving as Oakwood Theme Park opened and leaving at 5pm.  They were open until 6pm so we could have squeezed in a bit more fun but sadly we had a long drive home and needed to hit the road.  We left rather reluctantly as we were having so much fun!  But we had managed to tick off lots of the attractions, I have included some of our favourites below.  Although I need to come back one day so I can ride Speed.

Megafobia

Megafobia was great, a wooden coaster that was pretty fast especially in the rain!  I rode it happily three times in a row and would have carried on if it wasn’t for my desire to check out the rest of the park!  I would say sit in the first few carriages if you can as it gets quite rough the closer you sit to the back!  Although that is all part and parcel of being on a wooden coaster, I guess!  The seats are cushioned so at least they are relatively comfortable.

Witch Hunt

I surprised myself and found the courage to go inside Witch Hunt which opened last year.  It’s a seasonal attraction so will close on the 1^st of September but will open again as part of the Spooktacular event in Oakwood Theme Park.  It was full of jump scares and I would highly recommend it!  I just wish the rest of my family had braved it with me.  The “witches” do a great job, silently stalking you in the maze or jumping out in the dark.  My heart was bounding but I felt a huge sense of elation when I made it out.

Waterfall

I thought this was a fantastic ride.  Very fast and quite thrilling!  I did hold my breath for a second when I faced the steep drop!  Fortunately, I didn’t get wet, but I noticed some people having to wade their way off the ride!  I think you need to make sure your leaning forward like they advise.  If your balance is right, you land rather nicely on the dry!

Boating Lake

This was nice and relaxing.  I like that the rides here also let you experience the park more leisurely.  We had two goes as both the boys wanted to be able to have a turn at steering.  We did end up in the bushes twice but that was quite funny!  I love the view you get of Megafobia from the boating lake.  We went a bit slower heading back to dock so we could watch the drop!

Treetops

My youngest has gone a bit funny with rides, he is saying lately he is the “photographer” and refusing to ride but thankfully he was happy to give Treetops a go!  Then straight back on for another ride.  It has quite a decent sized track and is a nice family coaster ride.  I am hoping it will re-ignite his enthusiasm for rides again!

Bobsleigh

I thought it was fantastic that the mixture of rides included a bobsleigh track!  Although I was a bit chicken and went down with lots of brake action!  I think if I rode it again, I would try and pick up a bit more speed.

Pirate Ship

Handy for the little ones the pirate ship did a half swing every hour.  The full swing was more our cup of tea but I appreciate that they take into consideration younger kids too.

There are plenty more rides, like Dizzy Disk which opened this year, Snake River Falls, the Creepy Crawler, Spooky 3D (which my youngest wanted to ride a second time) and Witches’ Brew (seen below).

Then lots more to be found in Neverland.  Mine quite liked Tink’s Flying School and my eldest and I thought Skull Rock was good.  It had a bit of theming before the drop which I thought was a nice gesture.  It also caused quite a splash at the bottom!

Certain rides open later so its best working around that when you decide on a plan of action for the day.  Drenched I turned down because I didn’t want to be soaked for our journey home and it very much lived up to its name looking at those who chose to ride it!  We even managed to fit in a game of crazy golf which cost £1 each to play, 50p each was returned with the equipment, so it was very reasonable.

Oakwood was a good choice of theme park for us as a family.  The assortment of attractions meant everyone found something that kept them happy.  My husband even relinquished his bag carrying duties and joined in with a few of them.

It would have been nice if the Oakwood restaurant had more variety, but our baguettes did the job and you can bring in your own food if you prefer.
