Where Could I Improve My Parenting?

Being a good parent can sometimes be about looking at ways that you can keep getting better. Rather than assuming that things are fine, you might want to consider certain aspects that could allow you to change and improve your parenting. Hopefully growing with both the needs of your child and the world. This could also help to prevent you from gaining, or falling back into, bad habits which may negatively affect both your child and yourself.

Start With Your Finances

Looking to improve your finances could aid you with the way you parent your child. When you are able to make ends meet, and have some money left over, your child is unlikely to go without. At the same time, you may also be able to teach them some good saving and spending habits. Within this, you may also want to consider saving money for children. This can allow them to have a little bit more financial freedom in the future. It could also be a great idea to help your child to save with you. You could both deposit money into an ISA, or other junior savings account, that can grow alongside them.

When your child is an adult, and able to access the account, they may then be pleasantly surprised to see how those tiny deposits have accumulated over the years, and then be more likely to prioritize saving themselves in the future.

Calmer Parenting

Finding ways to be calmer could also positively impact your parenting. You may do your best to bite your tongue during tantrums or arguments. However at times, your temper gets the better of you. Tense situations could lead to both you and your child saying things that you regret. Usually, these outbursts may not help anyone, and leave both of you feeling guilty or upset instead.

Taking some time to calm down when tempers start to flare, and encouraging your child to also take those moments if they need to, could allow you to de-escalate situations. This doesn’t involve completely ignoring the problem at hand. Instead, you would simply be shelving it, if appropriate to do so, until you are both in the right head-space to discuss things rationally and politely.

Kindness

You may have spent a lot of time teaching your child to be kind and respectful. While this can be good, you may often forget to show yourself a little kindness too. By acknowledging how well you are doing, even if you do make mistakes from time to time, you may feel more prepared and energized to be able to combat the next issue. In addition to this, learning to show yourself kindness may also make it easier for those around you to display those same values, and put less pressure on themselves.

Improving your parenting isn’t always about trying to be perfect. Sometimes, it can incorporate new ideas and self-care, while thinking about the future as well as the present. In doing so, your whole family may be able to benefit from seeing and learning these changes.
