How To Make The Most of Your Garden in Winter

Now winter is very much here, the temperature has dropped and its bitter outside. But its still a good idea to get plenty of fresh air and spend time in your garden. Here are a few ideas that will help you make the most of your garden in winter.

Staying Warm

fire pit

It’s important not to get a chill from time outdoors. You have options like a fire pit for your garden or you could look at getting an Infrared Heaters instead. These give you more options to control the heat output that a fire. I also really like the eco design patio infrared tube. It gives a cosy candlelight atmosphere to enjoy entertaining with your friends and family. You can even change the light colour and effect depending on your mood!

Create a Space You Can Sit At

You already know to create or utilise the spaces you already have in your garden when it comes to the spring and summer, but why not do it in the winter and autumn too? If you really think about it, it’s more about creating a comfortable shelter where you won’t need to deal with the harsh elements. This could include putting thermal curtains up in a pergola, or you could go the easier route and look into garden rooms instead. You can add some furniture and a little heater, and now you have a cosy winter paradise right in your back garden!

Have Interesting Features

Without as many flowers you tend to need other focal points in your garden during the winter months. It can be a good idea to have a wooden arbour which will also give you some additional shelter too or you could have some garden statues.

Winter Colour

There are winter flowers you can choose like certain heathers, winter honeysuckle, witch hazel and certain breeds of pansies, Mahonia and winter jasmine. Or you could add colour in other ways such as spray painting your plant pots or repainting your garden furniture in a bolder colour.

Evergreen shrubs can also help take centre stage when other flowers have gone, giving you some kind of structure in those months your flower beds are empty. Don’t forget early spring flowers can start to show even in January so that might be another option to add winter colour.

Lighting

Add different lights to make your garden sparkle. It will improve your mood when its so damp and dark outside. Colourful lanterns can look so pretty hung around the garden. However, if you are on a budget just clear jam jars and tealights can look lovely when you have people visiting.

A Bird Feeder

It’s lovely seeing birds still visit your garden in winter. They really do need that helping hand when food sources can be scarce.

Peanuts, fruit, fat balls, sunflowers seeds, even leftover rice or potatoes will go down a treat with them. But do not forget to leave fresh water too.  We reviewed Nokular bird feed, they do different blends for various times of the year so birds get what they need at the right time.

For extra colour think about plants with berries, the bright red colour can soon make the place look more cheerful and festive even and help provide food for hungry birds.

Buy A Greenhouse

A greenhouse can be a real asset in winter. It will help protect your more vulnerable plants from the weather. Even in unheated certain produce with thrive like root vegetables or your leafy greens. Plus, it’s somewhere you can get a bit more shelter in on those coolest of days, when you still want to feel like you are busy in the garden.
