I will start of by saying our garden isn’t very attractive. I have wanted to landscape it for a long time. We have a mainly tarmacked area, as our house used to be a business. I think they went for that option, so they had so much more parking space and ease of maintenance.

It suited us well enough when the boys were little, going back and forth on their scooters, bikes and go karts. But now I want something more appealing. This has got me thinking of the five reasons why you should landscape your garden.

You should landscape your garden so you will enjoy spending more time in it. I think I would be out in my garden everyday if it was greener and more inviting. I do sit outside on occasion, but the outlook is quite depressing.

Gardens are such important spaces for your physical health for keeping us topped up with Vitamin D and giving our moods a boost because bacteria in the soil releases serotonin and dopamine in our bodies which makes us feel better. They also help with mental wellbeing just by being immersed in nature. Whether its hearing birdsong or the sound of swishing grass, it is great for mindfulness.

One thing you could consider when landscaping is privacy that will be important to potential buyers so you could invest in climbing plants to help with that. Gardens that are dual purpose will be more highly sought after too, so make sure designs include that all important entertainment space people love.

When you landscape your garden, you can look at ways to make it more low maintenance. For example, you can box in the flowers and plants, so you do not have to be quite so busy with pruning.

Choose low maintenance plants from the beginning such as lavender, ornamental grasses, coral bells and coneflowers. Basically, you want plants that are not susceptible to pests or diseases, that thrive with very little care and cope well in shade or sunlight. Here are a few of the plants you might want to avoid.

Therefore you do not have to worry about watering it as regularly in sun drenched areas. It can also save money because your not adding to your water bill as much as before. When you landscape your garden, you can look at how you can make it more secure. You do not want spaces a potential burglar can hide. Make sure you have enough light at night to deter potential criminal activity. Plant defensive hedges that are spiky or install high fences.

You can even apply anti-climb paint to fences, which makes them slippery and acts as another deterrent. Although you will need to put up a sign warning people of the paint you have used. Just in case you get sued! Which is a bit unfair really, seeing as they are your boundaries, and you are just trying to keep safe.

Help The Environment

We all need to consider the environment and what easier way than landscaping our gardens with nature in mind. By planting trees and shrubs, we are helping improve air pollution.
