Staying Safe On The Roads In The Winter
Staying safe on the roads in winter is especially important. Driving conditions are often much worse during October, November and December. The number of cycling and pedestrian injuries also increases. It is important to remain aware of the law surrounding road traffic accident claims. If you have been injured in an accident due to someone else’s negligence.
To keep safe on the roads during adverse weather, there are important steps that all road users can follow.
Before even getting in the car, it is important to ensure that it is in good condition and adequately prepared for the weather. This can include checking that heaters, defrosters, anti-freeze and windscreen wipers work, as well as the tyre tread depth and pressure. Further, carrying an emergency kit will keep you prepared in case of breakdown. I have included a bit more information about this below.
In poor weather, only drive if totally necessary. However, if you do need to drive then reducing speed, keeping a safe distance from the car in front and being aware of your surroundings can reduce the risk of harm.
Cyclists can be especially vulnerable during dark conditions. Ensuring that tyres have plenty of grip, keeping the chain in good condition and using lights to remain visible can increase safety. Pedestrians can also be harder to see. By taking precautions such as wearing high-visibility clothing, wearing appropriate footwear and being mindful of obstacles or dangerous areas, the level of risk can be reduced.
If you have an car essential journey to make, please follow their advice.
Also I just wanted to add the following:
Be Prepared
Ideally pack a breakdown survival kit with a torch, blanket, jumper cables and other necessities if the worst should happen.
Leave plenty of time when driving in the snow
Don’t rush a journey in winter. Keep slow and steady to avoid skidding. Make sure you leave extra time to reach your destination.
Stick to main roads
These are most likely to have been gritted during the night to prevent ice. Non gritted roads can be very dangerous to navigate.
