My boys love to read but part of that is down to offering them lots of variety!  Different subjects spark their interest and enthusiasm to keep reading.  I was excited to be sent three of the latest kids Carlton Books.  We had You Can Code, How To Be A Pro Gamer and YouTube World Records.

They quickly picked out a book each and it kept them occupied for ages.  I love it when my boys get lost in a good book.  It keeps them peaceful and focused!  During the summer holidays that becomes my little bit of quiet time too!  I can catch up on blog work without feeling guilty.

How To Be A Pro Gamer

This title was perfect for my boys.  They have watched gamers on YouTube and been amazed with how successful they have become.  So, they get stuck in wanting to learn as many tips as possible.  I think lots of children these days want to make it as a pro gamer.  What better way to start than learning more on the subject.  Knowledge is power after all!

The book covers everything you possibly need to know from creating your identity to picking out the game you want to excel at!  My husband even wanted to read the page about the best gear for gaming!  I have an Amazon voucher he wants to spend getting himself the best gaming mouse and keyboard… (so far I have managed to hang on to it, but I am not sure for how much longer!).

The book has interviews with famous game streamers.  They have some useful suggestions that can speed up your process to becoming a pro gamer.  Things like picking the most popular game out at the moment so you can be seen by more people.  That used to be Fortnite I guess, but my kids seem to be tiring of it finally.  I wonder what the next big thing will be.  They better do their research and find out.

I think my husband would have been a pro gamer once upon a time.  He had a team and was very successful, but this was before YouTube so although he had lots of fun, he never made any money!  If anything, he spent more money arranging all his LAN parties.

You Can Code

My eldest son has just started doing IT classes at secondary school so I thought this book would be a real asset for him.  It introduces coding, giving lots of tips and tutorials.  We might have a little coding summer project to keep his brain active during the holidays.

Who knows where books like this might lead children in the future?  They could be inspired to create the next big app or computer game.  I liked the addition of the glossary at the back of the book, so children understand the words coders use.  Everything is also broken down into easy to understand steps, so for a book on what can be quite a complicated subject its very kid friendly!

YouTube World Records

My eldest especially enjoys World Record books.  Given the popularity of YouTube I guess it was only natural to have a book that utilized that platform.  This is the fifth edition but its our first introduction this format.  I think we need to make more of an effort to keep up with the times.  It’s amazing that you can scan the QR code and watch a video of the record happening.

It really does bring the records to life when you can see them taking place.    You can’t realize just how incredible these people are without seeing it with your own eyes.  There is plenty of text to read too but its not the same as seeing it all in action!  It has made us appreciate how incredible these record breakers really are!
