Discover Lands Unknown is such an interesting concept, no two copies are the same.  The scenarios vary ever so slightly.  I had been putting off reviewing this game because the instruction booklet was pretty full on!  There is so much to read.  But I decided to give my husband responsibility for learning the game!  Then I joined in when he had a good idea how to play it.

A Game of Survival

I am so glad he preserved as it is such an interesting game of survival.  You have a day phase and a night phase.  Basically, you just hope you survive long enough to get off the island!  It starts when you wake up on a beach, its warm and looks idyllic so it starts off quite positively.  But there are monsters and wild animals to contend with and the worry of depleting resources, so the novelty of the paradise island wears off quickly I can tell you!

In the day you use up your stamina.  You can move and gather resources, scout to reveal sections of the map, investigate a new landmark, craft something to hopefully help you, trade with another survivor, cook meat or restart a fire.  You can also loot a casualty that has fallen.  Although we didn’t quite manage that, maybe that was an opportunity missed!  I am sure we will get more used to the game mechanics with further attempts.

I was pleased I crafted a bedroll with two pelts.  It meant I had 2 extra stamina each night, which does go a long way when you want to explore more of the map.

As you progress the threat cards become more challenging!

I noticed my eldest son kept close to the campsite whilst allowing us to do the more dangerous scouting work!  He went on to win so perhaps he was on to something there.  It is quite a tense game, especially as the monsters start to close in.  I like how the game board reveals itself as you explore.

My husband was the first to fall during Discover Lands Unknown.  Then I lost at the final hurdle, literally escape was in my grasp!  But the dice weren’t rolling in my favour!  It was the last monster fight and I fell.  My eldest managed to escape so he was delighted!  I really can’t wait to play the game again now.  It will be quicker to set up and play now we get what we are doing.
