The Benefits of Summer School
Where summer school is concerned, there are many social, cultural and academic benefits for children. One of the most obvious advantages is the confidence it gives them. They learn to be away from home for an extended period of time, interact with new people who may not even speak their language and develop a variety of new skills. In addition, they are able to build lifelong friendships with children of a similar age, but who come from different countries all around the world. I have teamed up with a primary school in Cambridge to explore more of the benefits of summer schools.
Broaden Your Horizons

When attending an international summer school, young people have the opportunity to meet other children who have different cultural, religious and political backgrounds. This experience allows them to become more culturally aware and generally open-minded. This type of international environment helps children learn and understand that we are all connected and we are all people, no matter what our views. What’s more, they learn to challenge one another in a healthy manner. Rather than being aggressive or judgemental in their opposing views.
Enhanced Learning Opportunities
Summer schools that offer academic subjects are fantastic because they give students the chance to progress in their education and gain the skills they need to perform well during the normal school term. Their programs often focus on things like public speaking and general language skills for those who do not speak English as their mother tongue. What’s more, at summer school children are encouraged to spend time outdoors and get plenty of physical exercise, thanks to the outdoor learning opportunities.
Looks Great On A CV
Any extra-curricular activities, including summer school, give young people an edge when the time comes to start applying to universities and even jobs. With admissions becoming more competitive than ever before, it’s important to stand out from the crowd. Essentially, summer schools give young people something to explore in their personal statement and interviews. They are able to demonstrate their willingness to learn. They meet new people and just go that extra mile.
It is difficult to deny the positive aspect of summer school. In essence, it can help young people develop many transferable skills. Both personal and academic. Furthermore they can make lifelong friends and become more confident. However, lots of parents prefer to keep their children at home during summer. So that the family can spend lots of quality time together. There’s no right or wrong answer but certainly something worth considering.
