Week 25 of 2020: Science And Farm Shop Finds
This week home schooling was quite exciting. It was very hands on! We had a few science experiments and also my youngest made butter! If you want to try them, I will include a few basic details below. We have been quite fortunate that the primary school like to keep the children busy on a more practical level. I think this suits my youngest, who is enjoying a break from written work. However, I do feel like I need to invest in lab coats for us all!
Coloured Ice Cubes

The idea of this experiment was to see if certain coloured ice cubes would melt faster. Ask your child to predict what they think will happen. We found that the darker colours melted slightly faster (however there wasn’t much in it if I am completely honest). The science behind this is darker colour absorb more light energy than lighter colours. That light energy heats the ice cube, so it melts quicker.
Making Butter

This is a good way to occupy your child for 20 minutes! Just get them to fill a jar with whole milk then get them to shake it energetically for a while. Slowly but surely you will see butter forming. It is so rewarding when you can drain out the buttermilk and add your own homemade butter to your sandwich! Proud moment for my youngest.
Colour Changing Cabbage Water

For this experiment you will need a red cabbage, a lemon, bicarbonate of soda and some laundry powder. You cut the red cabbage up and then boil in a little water for 2-3 minutes. Drain and pour out the cabbage water evenly into four jars. Then you get to the fun part, add lemon juice to the second jar, bicarbonate of soda to the third and laundry powder to the fourth! Then see the solution all “magically” change colour. The redder they go the more acid and in the case of the yellow of the laundry powder jar that shows that it is alkaline.
Reviewing
This week I have mainly reviewed books from Welbeck Publishing. The Binge Watch Guide: Best Streaming Shows in particular has been a real asset as I needed more suggestions of shows to watch. Naturally in lockdown we are spending more time at home than usual and TV has been one way to pass the time. I was also sent a lovely selection of father’s day gifts from Baylis & Harding. My husband will smell fantastic with combinations like Black pepper & Ginseng and Ginger & Lime.
Farm Shop

On one of our walks we stumbled upon a little farm shop! We were so pleased, it meant I could stock up on some tasty homemade cakes. We had millionaire’s shortbread, butter flapjacks, lemon drizzle and Bara Brith. I also managed to get hold of some eggs again which was a welcome bonus! I never seem to get them in my Tesco shops anymore.
Father’s Day

To celebrate Father’s Day we had a takeout Sunday dinner which was a lovely treat for everyone. The food was delicious and very affordable. My husband usually does the cooking and I think he earnt a day off!

The home schooling does sound like fun. I like the sound of making butter it sounds like a great way for them to do some exercise too. The cabbage water experiment sounds interesting.
The farm shop near us is great too. I can go just for some veg and come home with ice cream, jams and all sorts. Those cakes look so good x
A takeaway roast dinner sounds great, I am really missing roasts at the moment. The kids don’t eat them so used to go out with Hubby for a lunchtime treat
Your homeschooling does sound like fun. I like the sound of making butter, a great way for them to do some exercise too. The cabbage water experiment sounds interesting. Those cakes look amazing x
Wow, so cool of the school to encourage practical work. Must be interesting to make butter, and quite a simple way too. OoOooo interesting experiment, I thought too that the darker one would melt first for that reason. Cool experiment about cabbage water; so the cabbage water acts like a litmus paper? The food looks amazing!
Love the science experiments, we need to get back to more pratical things as my eldest is really struggling with all the worksheets. Yay to a farm shop and getting eggs. We have been lucky so far in the supermarket apart from the first couple of weeks. I didnt know you could get take out roast dinner!!
Oh wow those experiments look fun! Might have to try the ice cube one with my youngest…she will love it.
Making butter will be interesting too!
A week of hands-on science experiments sounds like lots of fun. Making butter is on my list of things I want to try with Sophie at some point. I never knew that darker coloured ice-cubes melt slightly faster than light-coloured ones due to them absorbing more light energy. How lovely to stumble upon a farm shop on one of your walks. Our local one sadly closed a couple of years ago. That take-out Sunday dinner looks delicious. #project366
Fab homeschooling experiments! I didn’t know that about the colours of ice. The cabbage water test is great fun too. Making butter is a good exercise, maybe I can convince my younger son to make us some fresh butter too.
The farm purchases look delicious.
The Sunday dinner looks delicious – yum ! Loving the home schooling experiments – they’re great fun ! We only have a week of school left but I think Pierre would have fun with those, even on holiday ! Great to hear you found a new farm shop – it all looks delicious 🙂
I am so jealous of your farm shop find… that cake looks amazing! We have an ice cream hut based on our favourite walk, but maybe we need to branch off and find a cake hut! 🙂
You have been doing so many experiments recently and super fun ones too! Your school have totally nailed the practical side, especially the making butter! Will definitely be giving that a try!
A takeout Sunday roast sounds amazing… but it also looks amazing too! So glad you all had a good day! Your hubby definitely earned the day off and what a lovely treat! 🙂
Here’s to another awesome week chick! Sim x
Father’s Day take out dinner looks lovely and nice for your husband to have the day off from cooking. The farm shop purchases are a great find, enjoy
Ooh I fancy letting the kids have a go at making butter! Our enthusiasm for home learnng is very diminished 🙁 #project366
