Top Tips for Protecting Your Home Against Cracks & Leaks
If you ever notice a crack or leak in your home, it’s vital that you get it repaired as soon as possible. If you leave a leak untreated, it can lead to damp and mould. Or even quite serious structural issues which do not help with creating a healthy home environment. Sometimes cracks and leaks are caused by problems with your building’s foundations. This is why I have teamed up with a pile foundations company to share some of the warning signs. Plus also suggest some preventative measures for protecting your home against cracks and leaks.
Settlement Cracks

Overtime, your house will settle on the ground beneath it. It’s perfectly normal for there to be some little shifts here and there. But it’s important to keep an eye out for any more dramatic changes to your building foundations. If your doors and windows start to stick, or fail to latch, this could be a sign that something is wrong. Another thing to look out for is cracks in your walls. Especially near doorways and windows, or where the wall meets the ceiling. Cracks outside on your patio are another sign that something is shifting below ground.
Protecting The Foundations
It’s important to protect your home’s foundations if you want to avoid these problems. Start by ensuring the ground stays moist throughout the summer months by using sprinklers when it’s particularly hot. If the soil around your property becomes too dry, it will shrink, and the foundations will move into the new empty space. Likewise, the soil should not be too wet either, because this will cause it to expand and put pressure on the foundations. With that said, be sure to check your drainage system and gutters regularly and remove any debris that may have collected in them so that rainwater can be carried away from your property.
Roof Maintenance
It’s not just the foundations of your buildings that can lead to cracks and leaks. It might be due to a missing or broken roof tile. With that said, be sure to inspect your roof every now and again and make any necessary repairs as soon as you can. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this, don’t hesitate to hire professional help.
