5 Signs Your Child Needs a Tutor

It goes without saying that all parents want the best for their children, in terms of their health, happiness and education. However, setbacks are inevitable and sometimes youngsters need a little helping hand to boost them in the right direction. In some cases, a private tutor might be that helping hand you’re looking for. Tutors are great because they provide one-to-one attention that school teachers aren’t always able to deliver, so their learning experience will be tailored to their unique learning style and abilities.

I have teamed up with a prep school in London to share five signs that your child needs a private tutor.

1) Poor Grades

This is probably the most obvious indicator that your child could use some extra support. Some modules will be more challenging than others, so your child’s poor grades might just be a blip, but if they are consistently performing poorly then a private tutor will be able to support them after hours so that they are more confident in the classroom.

2) Avoiding School

If your child seems to be coming up with any excuse they can to get out of going to school, it may be because they’re struggling in lessons. Of course, it could be another reason altogether, like problems with friends, so it’s worth sitting down with them and having an open and honest conversation about how they’re feeling. Remind them that you’re not there to judge them, you just want understand so that you can help.

3) Lack of Confidence

Low self-esteem is another sign that your child might be having a hard time understanding their schoolwork. Tutors are great for helping children feel more confident in their abilities, which might encourage them to engage more in class and participate in discussions.

4) Procrastination

It’s not uncommon for children to lack enthusiasm towards homework (and school in general) because there’s plenty of other, more enjoyable things they could be doing with their free time. However, procrastination might also be a sign that your child is feeling a little overwhelmed with their schoolwork and in need of some extra help.

5) Confusion With Homework

It’s wise to monitor your child whilst they’re doing their homework, because you will be able to determine how well they understand the content. If they seem to be constantly confused, leading to anxiety, sadness, and frustration, then they might benefit from a tutor. Children don’t always know how to deal with complicated emotions, so if they are struggling with their homework, this may manifest as behavioural problems, which won’t be good for anyone.

It might also be worth chatting to your child’s teachers at school on a regular basis to stay in the loop on how they are performing. They may be able to suggest some ways you can help your child with their learning at home, but as you know your child better than anyone, only you can decide if a tutor is the right option.
