The modern family road trip is, understandably, quite stressful. It’s not just about making sure that you are ready, but it’s about making sure your children are prepared. And while you may look after your car as best as you can, here are a few extra things to make sure those modern family road trips less stressful.

Preparing the Vehicle for Off-Road Journeys

If you think that preparing a very strict itinerary is the way to go, you might very well be missing out on a lot of the benefits of saying “yes” to detours. There are going to be things that will stop us from venturing off the beaten track. This could predominantly be to do with the car. If you’ve got a very modest family hatchback, you won’t venture further away from traditional roads. However if you get a 4×4 with 4×4 wheels, It is going to help you lose your inhibitions.

Going on holiday means we need to let ourselves off the leash. However, detours do not have to be about great adventures. They can be as simple as stopping at a nearby park so your children can go swing on the monkey bars or take a dip in a stream.

There is nothing worse than children saying they need to go to the toilet 15 minutes after you’ve set off. However it’s important to make sure that everybody is hydrated and doesn’t go thirsty. One of the best ways to make sure that your children are sufficiently hydrated is to pack fruit like grapes. Just make sure you cut them for younger children. Although you can let everybody drink as much as they want when you are 45 minutes away from the next toilet stop.

Have Breaks for Exercise

This is very important because we’ve got to feel like we are energized and ready for the next stretch in the car. Rather than just stopping at a service station, find a field where you and the kids can kick a ball around and stretch your legs at the same time. This will boost morale when you get back in the car. Plus it is going to make sure that everybody burns any energy off so they are more relaxed when they get back into the car. Hopefully this means you can focus on the road without noisy distractions.

Mentally Preparing Yourself

You can prepare yourself by making an itinerary. But also understanding what the potential problems will be when you get out on the road. It isn’t just about making sure that the children are occupied, but it’s about anticipating traffic issues and turning off your stress triggers. Because everybody is cooped up in the car for a long period of time, you’ve got to plan regular breaks. Also have a few tools in your back pockets to help you calm down, like breathing exercises.
