How to enjoy your outdoor space during the colder months

With the days getting colder, longer and darker, the last thing you want to think about is to be outside on your patio, isn’t it? It feels much better to be in snuggling on your sofa with a warm cuppa and a cosy blanket. However, your outdoor space deserves some attention too. Have you ever enjoyed a hot cup of tea on a frosty autumn morning? It’s truly special.

I believe that your outdoor space should be an extension of your indoor space. After all, it’s part of your home. Yes, it might be cold outside but there are ways you can uplift your outdoors to make sure you can make the most out of it, no matter the weather. Would you like to be able to use your patio or garden rain or shine?

For tips on to enjoy your outdoor space during the colder months, I’ve partnered with Elements Home & Garden, garden furniture Essex specialists, who have kitted out many homes all across the country during all seasons. Elements even have a team of professional Christmas decorators that can transform any dull space into a Christmas wonderland. Life with Baby Kicks recently shared some of the Christmas decorations made by Elements Home & Garden – how stunning are these?

Have a plan

So, you want to enjoy your outdoor space all year round? Time to start planning what you’ll need to have in your patio or garden to allow you to experience your outdoor space, no matter if it’s spring, summer, autumn or winter. Think about the things that are lacking in your garden – is it heating, lighting, seating…? And then work from there.

However, as this article in the Washington Post mentions, “Even the hardiest among us has their limits, though: Snow, ice and subzero temperatures may make being outdoors too miserable and maybe even unsafe. Have a plan for that, too.”

Think about heating

During the colder months, heating is key to a comfortable and enjoyable day outside. This means, blankets galore and other heating sources, such as a fire pit table (which covers both heating and seating!). “Fire pit tables are two-in-one tables where you can dine whilst enjoying the heat from the tabletop fire pit. These are not only functional by offering heat and creating a cosy atmosphere in your backyard but also highly decorative and stylish, making any outdoor space stand out.” explains Suburban Mum.

Think about lighting

Lighting is also essential for those dark evenings and late afternoons. Make sure to light up the way leading to your patio, and light up your outdoor dining and entertainment areas (I’d go for some outdoor fairy lights – they always looks great!). You could also add spotlights highlighting your favourite areas of the garden.

Think about shelter

Cold and rain come hand in hand during autumn and winter, so it’s important to be ready for the showers. Welsh Mum recommends Pop Up Gazebos, saying “pop up gazebos for this exact situation. These gazebos are perfect for all-year-round use and can be easily disassembled and assembled – the perfect solution for any gathering in your garden.”

Basically, be prepared for the worst. As Mum’s the Boss says in a recent blog post, “We can’t trust the English weather, you know it, I know it. So, always be prepared for the worst. This means, having a shaded solution for when it starts to rain, having a heating solution for those cold summer evenings and having outdoor lighting to keep enjoying your outdoor space all night long!”
