Firstly, I guess it helps to consider how interior design trends are shaped. Well, they are impacted by lots of different things happening in the world. Whether its upcoming celebrations, our economic situation or social factors.

For example, in the time of COVID you could see more interest in escapism seen in interiors. People wanted to feel like their home could transport them somewhere else. Plus, many have had to quickly adapt to working from home so that was another consideration.

So, what can we expect to see in the future?

Biophilic Design

This interior design trend aims to connect you with a natural environment. It has developed as a way to reduce our stress levels. Being surrounded by nature is considered to be very restorative. It can lower our blood pressure and heart rate. These health benefits might be something to consider in new homes, whether its through adjusting the air flow to mimic natural environments or adding more connections with nature such as reclaimed wood, hanging plants and water features.

Neotenic design

These designs have a childlike quality and are much softer. Reminding of us of our youth when playfulness and creativity was so important. But also driven by a focus on self-care we will see interior design trends adapting to provide more comfort in our lives. Our routines can be quite tedious so neotenic designs can be cheerful and fun-loving giving us a break from the monotony of our lives.

Working From Home

Interior design trends of the future are considering the fact that many of us are now working from home. It’s a time when we needed more space and flexibility. Ideally incorporating furniture that could pop up and be folded away afterwards. Not everyone had the luxury of a room available to turn into a designated office. Apparently there has been an increase of 339% for searches for foldable desks and I can totally understand why.

Smart Homes

At the moment many of us have standalone pieces of technology to control elements of our homes, whether its turning on the heating or the lights. In the future interior design trends will include more Smart technology seamlessly into the very structure of our homes. We might have everything from pet-caring robots to flooring that knows if someone elderly in the family has fallen and needs help. Technology will also remind us to take our medication and attend appointments.

3D Printed Furniture

Your imagination has few limits with 3D printed furniture. It offers so much choice when it comes to customization. It will become a more sustainable option using biodegradable polylactic acid plastic. Customers want to make sustainable choices but not always by re-purposing or reusing, 3D printing gives them the chance to be creative and think of the enviroment.
