The Surprising Benefits of Having a Family Pet

Choosing to introduce an animal friend into your family is a big decision and comes with its fair share of responsibility. There are so many different kinds of pets you could have, and finding the one that suits you and your family best can be a challenge. Once you have a pet, taking good care of it and ensuring that it lives a happy life with you is an added pressure. However, there are plenty of upsides to owning a pet and making it a part of your family. If you are undecided about whether or not you should take the plunge and bring home a new animal friend, continue reading.

Health and Fitness

Some kinds of pets are a great excuse to get more exercise. Dogs, for example, require regular walks and have a variety of fitness needs depending on the breed. Greyhounds are notorious for their ability to expend all their pent-up energy in short bursts while being extremely lazy at home, whereas dogs like Labradors Retrievers enjoy long hikes. Having an obligation to leave your home and take in the fresh air makes it easier to maintain both your dog’s and your own fitness. If you find it challenging to encourage your family to take exercise, a pet might tempt them out of the house.

Mental Health

It’s been shown that owning pets is good for your mental health. Interacting with animals releases positive chemicals in your mind and creates a bond between the animal and you. If you or someone in your family suffers from anxiety, having the soothing presence of a cat or rabbit nearby can somewhat alleviate the stress. It’s also good to have something outside of yourself to take care of as it can focus the mind and bring clarity.

Responsibility

A family pet can help your children grow up with a greater sense of responsibility for their actions and how they impact the world around them. Looking after an animal allows them to learn about the importance of routine and meeting the needs of others. Whether you get a fish, a guinea pig, or a puppy, the pet will always require food, water, shelter, and healthcare. Take your kids with you to the local vet when your pet needs a check-up, so they feel a sense of responsibility and ownership.  My earlier blog post about the truth of dog ownership might give you more of an idea about what to expect from life with your new pet.

Empathy

Another aspect of owning a pet that can help with the development of your children is how they contribute to lessons about empathy. Engaging with another living creature that can’t speak means your children will need to learn how to understand cues and body language that alerts them to their pet’s moods.

Bringing the Family Together

If you worry that your family spends too much time secluded in their rooms and not enough time together, a family pet can resolve this. Taking turns to look after your pet and enjoying its company together can not only increase your bond with the animal but with your family as well.
