How to Create a Home Office in Your Bedroom

With more people working from home, it makes sense to re-purpose the space in your home, so you have a dedicated area to work. However not everyone has the luxury of a spare room to create a home office.

Furthermore, you might find it hard to be productive in the living room or kitchen as they lack privacy. They can also get very noisy! As anyone with teenage children who enjoy gaming will well know. It makes sense then to consider the option to create a home office in your bedroom. At least then you are away from the distractions of family life and can focus on the work at hand.

Read on for some things to consider that will help you make the perfect multi-functional room.

Type of Bed

Depending on the type of bed you pick you can squeeze in some extra storage into your bedroom. This will also come in handy for having an organized home office. For example, a divan bed can include pull out drawers which can help you keep clutter to a minimum. Alternatively, you could choose an Ottoman bed which has so much storage space hidden beneath the mattress.

Make sure you keep your bed and desk at opposite sides of the room to achieve a clear distinction between work and rest.

If you wanted to try something completely different you could consider a flip down bed that you can put away when you are working. This will give you more space during the day to spread out your work documents and folders. Then when its time for sleep you just pull your Murphy bed down. Which is a good way of letting your brain know the room is ready for another purpose.

Hidden Desk

Having a bedroom that also serves as your home office can come with its own challenges. Our bedroom environment plays a big part on our sleep quality so it’s important to consider that when designing your home office. Some say reminders of work should be kept out of the bedroom to help us switch off and relax. So, you could hide a desk in fitted wardrobes to get round this. Then everything you need for work can be stored out of sight. It’s a good way to establish clear boundaries between work and personal life. Otherwise, you might find it hard to slow down and unwind.

Room Divider

Another option you could try when you create a home office is to incorporate a room divider. This will help you identify two clear areas in your bedroom. It does not have to be a traditional room divider either. You could use a shelving unit just so you can maximise the storage available in the room. Or another choice to divide the two zones is to use curtains or rugs. An advantage of curtains or rugs is they can also add texture and a pop of colour to the room.

A creative idea is to have a plant wall. You could use some of these best bedroom plants which also purify the air. Lavender in particular can also reduce stress levels and your blood pressure. That is quite handy to help you switch off to sleep if you have dealt with a difficult day in the office. Additionally green offices make staff more productive so incorporating plants into your home office in the bedroom should help in that respect too.

Narrow Desk

If you do not have much space in your bedroom invest in a slim sized desk. Or even better you could have a folding desk that you can put away when the workday is over. Just remember whatever desk you pick make sure it fits in with the décor of the bedroom. You want it to come together seamlessly.

Cord Management

The power cords needed for a home office can make your bedroom look quite untidy. When you create your home office you need to think about hiding them better. You have lots of different options you could try. Some like using cable ties, whilst others prefer cable sleeves or trays or even a cable box. Find a solution that works for your needs.

Lighting

Appropriate lighting levels is important to stop you having eye strain and developing headaches when working from home. All of which will lead to a decline in your productivity which ideally you will want to avoid. Therefore, place your desk close to the window to maximise the natural light to help you stay alert during the day. This will also have the added advantage of helping you sleep better and improving your mood.

Being close to a window is also a good way to feel connected to the wider world. Working from home can be quite lonely at times. I write from experience as a self employed blogger of many years.

Colour Temperature Of Your Screen

It’s worthwhile having an app on your computer that will adjust the colour temperature of your computer screen. As the day progresses you want to avoid blue light which can impact your sleep patterns. The app will filter out the blue wavelengths if you are still working late into the evening.

Desk Backdrop

The wall behind your desk should be nicely decorated with pictures or shelves with plants and accessories. Then you can always put your laptop away and still have an attractive corner of your room. Hopefully one that compliments the bedroom when you have finished your working day. You could even make your desk double up as a dressing table.

Pick The Right Chair

Remember you do not have to pick out a traditional office chair. You could go for something that will still give you support but will still fit in beautifully with your bedroom decor. Posture will always be your priority; however, you do not have to compromise when it comes to design. You can pick out office chairs that look very elegant and chic.

Hopefully these tips will have helped you create the ideal home office in your bedroom.
