I have often been tempted to have my own home bar. Just so I had an inviting space to relax in my own home. Especially nowadays given the cost of drinking at a regular bar. My friend paid over £9 for a double vodka and coke the other day! We both were a little shocked at the price.

I don’t really drink but would love a home bar to have people over to socialize. Plus depending on the design and quality of the build a home bar can even add value to your property! So, it can work out well financially in lots of different ways.

So, if your now convinced to have your own home bar what do you need to consider? well read on below for a few pointers.

Bar Stools

Getting the seating right is essential. you will want your guests to have good posture so they are comfortable.

When choosing your bar stools make sure you consider their width. It’s important because you need to have adequate space for the number you want to order. There is no point trying to squeeze in too many bar stools and making people uncomfortable.

Jigger – to measure out the quantities of alcohol.

Cocktail shaker – A cocktail shaker helps dilute drinks better than just stirring.

Strainer – after using your cocktail shaker a strainer will stop any fruit bits or ice making it into the served drink.

Ice Bucket – rather than sending guests to dig around in your freezer an ice bucket situated right by your home bar is much more convenient to keep drinks chilled.

Glassware – there are many types of glasses out there. You will need a selection such as martini glasses, high ball glasses, champagne flutes, wine glasses and whisky tumblers. Don’t forget some shot glasses too. Although remember things can get messy once shots are involved!

Alcohol

It can be a bit daunting deciding what alcohol to buy for your home bar. Starting from scratch with so many different options is quite overwhelming. Then you should hopefully have something that will appeal to everyone. Over time you can add to your collection as your confidence and ability at making drinks grows.

My favourite cocktail is a Strawberry Fizz for this you will need 45ml Vodka, 25ml lemon juice, 25ml sugar syrup, soda and strawberries. So, it’s a good idea to have plenty of soda and sugar syrup in supply too for when you become more ambitious in your creations.

The Bar Itself

Make sure you have plenty of room for glassware, its more practical when glasses can be hung upside down off shelves to maximise space.

You could consider ordering some neon bar sign lights if you want to make your home bar look more exciting. Some just go for a simple “Bar” option but others have more elaborate wording like “Make mine a double”.

If you’re planning an outdoor bar, make sure you fully weatherproof it. Inside bars will be easier to maintain. But it will depend on the available space in your home.

Depending on budget constraints many are choosing to have drinks trolleys instead of a proper bar. Although if you are quite handy with woodwork you could try building a bar yourself. If you only have the cost of the materials a home bar can be much more affordable.
