Although you might be surprised on the songs you will find on there. Well, perhaps not if you’re a dad of a certain age, you have probably noticed all your firm favourites. Check them out and share your musical genes with your family.

What is Dad Rock?

If I am truthful its not a term I had heard before. So, I had to do some digging, it was actually music critics that started using the term “Dad Rock”. It really is just the music our dads are enjoying at the time, basically any of the tracks that inspired them.

But naturally that changes. The only thing is the term “Dad Rock” is quite broad now. It covers so many different types of rock music and artists just when they and their audience reach middle age.

Seen As An Insult?

Some singers thought the term “Dad Rock” was unflattering and hurtful. But with a track list like the one above I don’t think anyone can be judgemental.

I am sure my teenage boys would have their own ideas about what their dad listens too. Although, at 42 he has quite an eclectic mix of music he enjoys. Some of which our boys would probably approve of and some they probably wouldn’t.

However, it will go full circle when they have children, They will probably find them having strong views about the “dad rock” they now enjoy, which will probably be whatever they are listening to in about four or five years.

Now A Badge Of Honor

What started as a somewhat derogatory label has become more of a badge of honor for many. As you turn 40 and realize the merits of knowing your own mind and what music you like, then “Dad Rock” seems less of an insult and more of a compliment!

Dads have begun to embrace the term. Many proudly wearing their “dad rock” status like a medal. After all, these were the songs that defined their youth, provided the soundtrack to their wild years, and later became the comforting background to family life. My husband can often be found listening to old music videos feeling nostalgic. Making the most of his “dad rock” time in peace. It takes him back to a time without financial planning for your family and responsibilities, when he was more of a free spirit with reckless abandon.

Continually Evolving

It does seem like “Dad Rock” is continually evolving. Depending on what the latest generation of new dads are into really.

Tracks That You Didn’t Realize Are Now ‘Dad Rock’

It seems incredible that the likes of Limp Bizkit’s ““Rollin’ (Air Raid Vehicle)”, Green Day’s “American Idiot”, Blur’s “Song 2”, Oasis’s “Morning Glory” and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Can’t Stop,” are all now examples of “dad rock”. They seem too modern, don’t they?

Surely it wasn’t that long ago any of us were listening to them originally! But surprising these tracks are now two decades old! Knowing that can soon start to make you feel very old. My husband certainly doesn’t see dad rock as retro now. To him its very relevant as it’s the music he currently enjoys.

The early 2000’s were a pivotal time for what’s now dad rock. Before that dad rock had been quite mellow. More the likes of Eric Clapton and Bruce Springsteen. Now its applied to newer bands each time. It continually adapts. It doesn’t just refer to any particular genre or era anymore.
