It can be hard selling your house.  It’s a place you naturally get quite attached too.  Everything is familiar and just how you like it.  However, you might find the things you thought worked prospective buyers can’t stand!  Try not to take it personally.  Get your house ready for a quick sale following these tips from a Rattan Direct infographic.  It’s not rocket science, but many people don’t stage their house for a quick sale.

The aim of these tips are to make your house appeal to as many buyers as possible.  We attempted to have our house re-valued lately and even that didn’t go particularly well.  So, I know when we come to sell we need to up our game considerably.  Apparently big houses like ours are hard to shift, so we will have our work cut out.

Curb Appeal

This is important, the person valuing our house had circled it first taking in all the exterior.  First impressions are vital, and we probably put him off in the first instance.  Our borders are overgrown with weeds seeing as neither my husband or I are particularly green fingered!  But for the sake of a quick sale (or a higher valuation!) presentation is key!  Work with what you have, set out the garden furniture and add some colourful flowers.  The paint on our front door is peeling, it desperately needs repainting.  Otherwise it gives off a general feeling of not maintaining the rest of the house!

Clean and Declutter

You want the prospective buyer to be able to imagine themselves living there.  But if the house is jam packed with all your personal knick-knacks it’s hard for them to do that.   You want to also give the illusion of space, so clean empty surfaces, rooms not overfilled with furniture and belongings are all part of the process.

Colour

Keep a lot of the décor quite neutral, perhaps only adding colour through the accessories.  If you have bright purple walls it can be a bit off-putting for the majority of buyers.  Certain paint colours make rooms appear more spacious so keep that in mind if you wanted to give your home a quick lick of paint before selling.

Nowhere is off limits

Potential buyers will snoop in the cupboards and open wardrobes.  Nowhere is off limits when they thoroughly explore your house.  Try and keep even those places in a good state of upkeep.  Assume no corner of your house will be unturned!  I need to remember this for the space under our stairs which is a dumping ground for everything we own that doesn’t have a proper place of its own.
