House of Danger Adventure Game and Review

My son already has the Choose Your Own Adventure books.  He was very excited that he could now try out an adventure game for the House of Danger one.

It is a co-operative game.  Initially we started off playing with just my eldest and me.  But eventually my youngest decided to join in for a couple of chapters.  As a parent I found it to be such a good game to improve their reading.  They had quite big passages to understand with very descriptive text that really developed their vocabulary.

Before you begin you can look at the back of the game board for two minutes to get some clues about what places and items are worth investigating.  It’s a good mental exercise to see what information you can retain.

As you progress through the psychic scale you can also unlock premonitions which warn of dangers ahead!  They got us out of a few pickles.

House of Danger

The first time we played we weren’t overly happy with our outcome!  We saved Earth but not ourselves!  Undeterred we tried again, deciding to brave the House of Danger once more!  That time round we investigated more thoroughly.  Exploring additional rooms and trying out different combinations.  We made the most of the opportunity to do the story return to head to rooms we missed!  In the hope they might offer exciting items we needed or additional psychic scale points.

We became more daring to increase our stash of items instead of cautiously making our way through the chapter!  Before we rushed to the end goal and didn’t get involved in too many optional challenges.  It seemed too scary after our head had exploded and we had been mortally wounded with knives.  Yes, it seemed better to stick to the safe path and try and avoid the gory deaths!  The game is pitched for ages 10+ and I would strongly recommend sticking with that guide if you have a sensitive child.  My almost 10-year-old gave the game 9 and a half out of 10 just deducting half a point for gore.  But its not too bad if you are wary of violin playing chimpanzees!!!

We soon learnt when we got to the end of our first game that higher risk would have led to higher returns.  We didn’t win every battle, but we did well enough in them that our choices helped us become a level 5 psychic investigator!  The game does keep you on the edge of your seat, its so full of suspense.

An element of the game is down to luck, if you have a good run with the dice and keep getting a dice roll equal or higher to your danger meter then all is fine!  But if your luck turns you can start to rely heavily on your challenge boosters!  Just don’t roll a 1 or risk losing it!  Unless you have been fortunate to grab yourself a coffee so you can reroll one dice roll.

I really hope they bring out the other books as games soon!  It was a lovely way to spend our Sunday afternoon working together as a family to outsmart the House of Danger!
