AD My youngest soon warmed up to the story of Rockford a rescue dog from Battersea Dogs home who is loyal and loving and has a rather crooked tail. Rockford’s Rock Opera is a wonderful mix of storytelling and singing. As the story progressed, my son was keen to see what would happen next. Would Moog manage to be reunited with his inquisitive dog?

The creator has skilfully developed the story, so you soon become hooked. You can feel the suspense building with the climatic music. After we finished the first series, they eagerly downloaded part 2. Currently Rockford’s Rock Opera is completely free, so well worth a watch, your children will be thoroughly entertained.  Download from the app store or Audible.

Surprisingly Moving

It is quite a magical and atmospheric tale. But it teaches some particularly important lessons about extinction and biodiversity. But all in a way that younger children will understand. Although we all felt a little sad hearing about the Cocklebur Ick with their quick sticking fur. A small but cute character with a very sticky back. The name was inspired by the Cocklebur seed which helped with the creation of Velcro fasteners (so we learnt something new there!). It makes a lot of sense when you listen to the story and meet one of the villains (never trust anyone offering tea, jam, raisins, and sweets!). I really wish he had stuck to buttons instead!

Even though it is sad and poignant in places it is funny too. We had a few laughs, which are much needed when we are stuck in lockdown. These stories seem to affect your emotions in lots of different ways. But our main takeaway from watching them was the need to look after the animals of the worlds and truly value them. It will be too late when they are gone. The moth thought he had more to offer the world, but sadly his fate was sealed.

Such An Enchanting Story

The story is very descriptive, examples like “tangerine orange skies” and “dusky lake” – so children can help develop their vocabulary and visualize everything. The illustrations really bring the quirky characters to life.  Some of them are so beautiful and magical!

Rockford’s Rock Opera features and is scripted by BBC writer and performer Steve Punt. I was pleased there was not any advertising or in app purchases to be made once it was downloaded.

Rockford ends up accidentally caught up in an adventure to Infinity Island, after he finds the last remaining Cocklebur Ick stuck to his back. Together they make the journey through the sea of tranquility after being granted safe passage from the squid squad. The island is home to lots of animals that have become extinct. They are the very last of their kind. So, the fact Rockford has turned up can make things take a troublesome turn! Especially when the power-hungry registrar seems uncompromising! I do not want to give away anymore of the story, I think its probably best if you download it yourself and see what your children make of it.
