Athens is the capital city of Greece and is regarded as one of Europe’s most interesting and historic cities. It is a favorite destination for holidays especially popular among families. The Greek capital is full of culture and history. Therefore a family trip to Athens can be extremely educational. Whilst still being plenty of fun for you and your children.

Family-Friendly Attractions in Athens

Golden Hall 

The Golden Hall is a popular attraction in Athens. Children will definitely enjoy spending some time here. Especially in the playground area with climbing frames and extra activities. The other side is covered with bright colors from plants, flowers, and trees. The Golden Hall is a perfect place for families since children can have some fun in the playground. I find it gives the adults time to do a little relaxing or some shopping in the retail stores in the area. 

Hellenic Children’s Museum

As the name suggests, the Hellenic Children’s Museum is geared towards younger visitors. Mainly children from ages 1 to 12. Founded in 1987, the museum’s main purpose is to help discover and develop a child’s individuality, creativity, and social conscience. It is filled with various interactive exhibits. But also has play areas with different themes that are both fun and educational. 

Acropolis

I think no trip to Athens would be complete without visiting this attraction! This ancient fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the most important monuments in the world. I would not want to skip it. Especially as it is interesting for your kids to learn all about the history of the site. A guided tour is not required, but is recommended. Then you can skip the lines as well as learn from an experienced tour guide. You can even book a private family tour online before your visit.

Allou! Fun Park

Allou! Fun Park is an amusement park that’s perfect for the young and the young at heart. Located in Rentis, it is Greece’s largest amusement park. So its no surprise it is one of the city’s most popular destinations! Especially for those traveling with children. There are multiple attractions at this fun park suited for all ages. It has roller coasters, carousels, swings, trains, and even water rafting. There is also an area known as Kidom. This kids-only section of the park is filled with entertaining games and rides.

Eugenides Planetarium (Athens Planetarium)

This planetarium is an impressive facility related to all things science and technology. It offers educational exhibits such as 3D films and interactive games. The aim of the attraction is to share knowledge about different fields of science. Children into STEM will enjoy the facility’s Interactive Science and Technology Exhibition. Here they will be taught the vital role of technology in everyday life.

National Gardens of Athens

I find family time outdoors is a welcome escape from bustling city life. So I would recommend heading over to the National Gardens of Athens. The garden is located right in the heart of the city. The stunning green space was originally built as a royal garden for Queen Amalia in 1836. Now the garden has become a public park popular with locals and tourists. Aside from the pretty plants and flowers, the garden also has a mini zoo. Here you will find frogs, turtles, birds, and fish. Plus a shaded playground and grassy areas where children can run around and play. There is also a café and a children’s library in the area. I would plan to bring your kids for a full day of fun and playtime.

Attica Zoological Park

Children enjoy seeing animals up close therefore the Attica Zoological Park is a great place to visit with your family when in Athens. Found just outside of Spata, this 20-acre zoo was initially meant to be a bird park. It still houses one of the biggest bird collections in the world. However over time, more and more animals were added into the area. Today the Zoological Park is home to over 2,000 animals across 290 different species. With chimpanzees, dolphins, snakes, rhinos, tortoises, and more to see.

The Museum of Greek Children’s Art

I think the Museum of Greek Children’s Art is one of the most unique museums you will visit in Athens. Certainly one that your kids will truly appreciate! Opened in 1994 and situated in the Plaka neighborhood, the museum hosts over 10,000 pieces of artwork. All of which were created by children from the ages 4 to 14. This is because the facility believes that art is a special way of expression. The museum would like to encourage the youth to be more in touch with their artistic and creative side. Aside from the displays, the Museum of Greek Children’s Art also hosts workshops and seminars, and other activities for children and their parents. 

The Center of the Earth Park

Did you know that the center of the earth is in Athens? One of Athens’ most interesting attractions is The Center of the Earth Park. This 25-acre green space is found in the heart of the city. The park is home to several environmental exhibits, a vegetable garden, and a mini-museum of insects. Here, kids and adults get educated on different sustainable development techniques. The objective is sharing the importance of respecting and protecting the environment. The park also regularly hosts workshops on sustainability. 

Ergastirio Mairivi

Located in Psirri, the Ergastirio Mairivi is a puppet theater. I think this an interesting attraction to visit with the family. Founded in 1999, it was originally intended for research and expansion of puppet theater art in the country. Today, they host several puppet shows as well as workshops for those interested in the art. Although the production is in Greek, I hear they use animation techniques that can easily be understood.
