Kitchen Kit – 5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Cookware

Your pots and pans are often among the last things to see an upgrade in your kitchen. So many other things show their wear first, like cracked coffee mugs and stained Tupperware. However, your cookware might be silently screaming for your attention, and you haven’t realized it.

Before you line up your pots and pans for another cooking session, look for some of the following signs. If you see them, you may need to replace your cookware sooner rather than later.

Non-Stick Surfaces Are Scratched

Non-stick cookware is undoubtedly convenient. The coating keeps food from sticking to the metal, and cleanup is a breeze. However, the non-stick coating can wear off over time or scratch off if you use the wrong utensils.

Though you can benefit from superior non-stick technology with diamond reinforcing, it’s worth keeping an eye on your non-stick induction cookware to see if it has any scratches or imperfections. If it does, small flakes of the coating can end up in your food, meaning you may require a replacement set sooner rather than later.

Your Pots and Pans Are Warped

If you’ve ever been frustrated by a pot or pan not sitting flush on your stove, you might think an uneven element is to blame. However, it’s more likely that you have warped cookware.

Heating a pan to a high temperature then quickly cooling it may cause metal and cast iron to warp. This can happen in various situations, such as searing a steak on high heat, then throwing the pan into a sink of soapy water immediately after.

To check if this is a problem, sit your pots and pans on a flat surface and push the handle down. If they wobble, your cookware may be warped, and your food may not cook evenly.

Your Copper Cookware Is Damaged

Many professional and home chefs prefer cooking with copper because you don’t have to pre-heat it, and it cooks food at an even temperature. However, as practical as copper is, it does have some drawbacks when it gets damaged.

If copper cookware’s lining is scratched or cracked, it can be dangerous. Copper is something we naturally consume, but there are health risks associated with excess copper consumption. You can have old copper cookware relined and fixed, or you may decide to upgrade your set instead.

The Handles Are Damaged

The handles of your pots and pans get as much use as the interiors of your cookware. Depending on how they are attached and what materials they feature, they may succumb to wear and tear over time.

For example, plastic handles can come loose from the base or get melted accidentally. You may also notice that screws can come loose, and some inferior plastic can crack, making it unsafe to use the pan.

When you notice handle damage that can’t be fixed, it might be time to replace your cookware. Even if the cookware itself is okay, you may end up with burn injuries if the handle fails when you least expect it.

It Doesn’t Suit Your Needs

If you have upgraded your stove to an induction model, or you have a much larger family than you used to, you may see the need to upgrade your cookware for reasons other than damage or wear and tear. Larger cookware can be necessary for convenience, while induction cookware goes hand-in-hand with an induction cooktop.

Replacing your cookware may be one of the last things on your list, but it can be crucial. Don’t risk your health and safety in the kitchen by using inferior cookware that may do you harm. Plus look for cookware that will last for a more ecological friendly kitchen when you come to purchase replacements.
