Why Should You Add A Porch To Your Home?

There are lots of reasons why you should add a porch to your home if you do not already have one. I will go over them in detail in this article. Many of these benefits I have experienced first hand as I have had a porch for over eight years since moving here.

Our previous home did not have one and if and when we move, I will definitely prioritize homes with porches when house hunting.

Increase The Value Of Your Home

Glass porches can increase the value of your home as they make them look brighter with natural light flooding in.

Curb appeal is very important to draw in potential buyers. A porch that is well done and looks the part will capture their interest and encourage them to book a viewing.

Although, it is important to make sure the porch is in keeping with the style of the property. Glass porches work well in contemporary modern homes, whereas oak and brick are more suitable for traditional homes.

Extra Security

A porch is another layer of security for your home. It will act as a deterrent because it means another door an intruder has to bypass before getting into your property. You want to make it as difficult as possible to get into your inner sanctum. Don’t worry about opting for glass porches either they are made with toughened glass so are very strong.

Keeps Your Home Warmer

Adding a closed porch will help keep your home warmer. If you live in a warm home, you are more likely to be happier and healthy.

Cold homes can make you prone to illnesses and respiratory diseases. As an asthmatic that is something I want to avoid worsening, especially now winter is here. I really do feel the cold, so when I turn on the heating, I want to hang on to as much of it as possible.

A porch protects your home from draughts every time the front door opens. Our front door is used very regularly with two dogs always wanting access to the garden.

Even when its closed gaps in older doors can make the cold get inside your home. So, it’s not just having that extra door with a porch but also making sure they are newer doors for a significance reduction in heat loss.

Keeps Your Hallway Tidy

If your porch is a reasonable size, you will have a useful storage space, you can keep your shoes and coats there. This will make it look much tidier once you enter your home. Also, by keeping shoes in the porch only your carpets will last longer. Shoes actually wear them down much quicker than bare feet or socks. Plus, they bring in a lot of dirt and even bacteria and diseases too.

You Don’t Need Planning Permission

If you keep to certain dimensions, then you do not need to have planning permission to add a porch to your house in the UK. That means it’s something you can consider without any complications as they are a permitted development. However, if it is a listed building you will have to ask for consent to go ahead.

Avoid Going Straight Into The Living Room

Some homes do not have the luxury of hallways, they just go straight through the front door into the living room. Adding a porch is a good way to give the living space a clearer purpose because the porch will become the initial entryway. This means shoes and coats do not have to be stored in your living room.

Somewhere Safe For Deliveries

add a porch

Having a porch means packages can be stored safely away from bad weather. It was a very handy feature, although we did stop doing this eventually as we had an optimistic delivery man take everything else that was already there. I would recommend getting a video doorbell to help protect against this.
