How your bed can affect your health
It is generally recommended that you replace your mattress every eight years. So, if you have been hanging on to yours for much longer than that it might be worth buying a new mattress. Your bed might be making you ill if you keep putting it off.
It can be expensive doing so. Fortunately sites like Groupon have bedding and mattress deals so you don’t have to spend a fortune to have a comfortable or hygienic night’s sleep. Sleep is vital for your wellbeing so investing in a supportive mattress is a wise move. Gradually your mattress losses its bounce so if you share your bed with your partner them moving around might disrupt your sleep.
Over time your mattress can also become quite unhygienic. Our bedding is regularly washed but the mattress isn’t. It can become a breeding ground for all kinds of unpleasant bacteria. As an asthmatic that can aggravate my condition and make me quite poorly.
When to replace your pillows?
The Sleep Foundation recommend pillows are replaced every two to three years. The NHS say every year. Groupon had a deal for six pillows for £14! At that price I am quite happy to follow the suggested guidelines.
Dealing with Dust Mites
Apparently, the average bed contains millions of dust mites. It’s enough to make your skin crawl thinking about that. They can cause allergies for at least 12 million Britons. It is advisable to wash bedding every week.
According to this article “Reportedly, a third of the weight of a two-year-old pillow is made up of dust mite faeces and dead skin.” I might have to place a quick order of pillows for everyone here, I feel sick by the very thought of it.
Washing your Duvet
I must confess I thought washing the bedding was enough, but it is advised that duvets are washed every six months. It needs to be at 60 degrees to kill dust mites, any less and you only temporarily remove allergens which quickly build back up.
How often do you replace your mattress?
Ours is relatively new thankfully. We were sent the Leesa mattress back in 2018 so I think I have a good few years left. But I won’t hesitate when the eight to ten years pass, I will look around for a good deal and get a new one right away to keep those uninvited guests at bay!
