We really enjoyed watching The Kid Who Would Be King when it was released in the cinema in February.  My boys have started swaying towards live action films, so picked this title to watch with their nanny in the cinema.

We all loved the concept and the characters.  For a while after my two would mimic Merlin’s magical hand actions!  He is quite entertaining to watch.

The Plot

The main character Alex has his work cut out uniting everyone in time to save the world!  You can feel the tension building hoping he can do it in time.  He has lots of obstacles to overcome.  It’s great seeing his journey as his character develops after he pulls out the mythical sword in the stone, Excalibur.

Life hasn’t been easy for him with starting a new school, bullies and an absent father.  His character makes you realize you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it!  So positive messages there for children to try and work through their issues and come out more resilient in the process.  He has a strong female character in his life, his mum works hard to support him and juggle working fulltime.  He also has his reliable best friend Bedders.

The end battle is quite gripping, lots of action as everyone comes together to try and defeat Morgana.  My boys liked the special effects.  I am surprised more people haven’t watched this title.  We left the cinema on a real high we enjoyed it that much!

My boys were 10 and 11 when they watched the film so if you have children around that age this title comes highly recommended!  I think the fact the film is based on a 12-year-old boy means they can relate to him.  Although my husband in his 30’s, me at 40 and my mother in law in her 60’s were all thoroughly entertained too!  I do think it has quite wide appeal.  I love the medieval theme.  But I did leave the cinema craving fried chicken!!!  Thanks for that Merlin.
