Five Tips To Keep Your Ears, Nose And Throat Healthy

I went through a stage of getting sinusitis repeatedly a few years back.  I think I must have been run down because it just kept happening.  It’s not very pleasant at all because I didn’t enjoy my food for a while.  I couldn’t taste or smell properly, so I was eating for the sake of eating rather than the enjoyment of my food.  As someone who loves food it was unbearable.  Plus, every time I looked down; I would have the most awful sinus headache.  It’s no fun being ill for a long time when you have responsibilities to your family and home, hopefully these tips will help you keep your ears, nose and throat healthy.

Wash Your Hands

It’s basic advice but its amazing how many people don’t seem to follow it, just watch how many fail to do so when leaving public toilets.  Washing your hands stops the spread of disease and viruses which make you unwell.  But equally you don’t want to over wash your hands either.  If your hands become dry and cracked, then germs have a new way to enter your body!  Follow this advice from the NHS on effective handwashing.

See a Specialist

If like me you keep getting ill with an ear, nose and throat issue it might be worth seeing a specialist to see if there is an underlying problem.  Depending on your location you could visit an ENT Doctor in Harley Street who have state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment to get to the route of the problem.  I did feel frustrated it kept happening to me so frequently.  It’s worth noting that your ear, nose and throat are all linked, so an infection in one area might impact the other two.

Limit The Use Of Headphones

headphones

I never realized this was a problem until recently.  I feel a bit guilty as every night I tend to wear headphones to watch TV in bed.   But long-term use can lead to future hearing problems as headphones cause hair cells in the cochlea to bend down.  If you still want to wear headphones make sure you have regular breaks.  The best thing to do is limit exposure but also make sure you don’t have the volume too high either.

Get Rid Of Carpets

Getting rid of carpets can make you feel cold, but we have found it’s a lot less dusty.  Carpets trap dust, pet dander and dust mites which are all allergens.  Allergies can affect your ears, nose and throat.  You might notice things like a runny nose, itchy sensation in your throat or unexplained nosebleeds.  If you do everything you can to reduce your exposure to allergens you should notice these symptoms lessening.

Stop Smoking

Smoking can impact your Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) health.  If you smoke your more prone to certain disorders like otitis media (inflammation in the middle ear), tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and throat pain.  Not only does quitting help with these issues, your general health will improve too.

These are just a few of the changes you can make.  There are plenty of other things you can do too.
