Understanding Your Fertility

Fertility is a rather complex subject.  One that is often thought of as quite a taboo. Many people would argue that we aren’t given a thorough enough education on fertility and procreation.  Which lead us to treat our bodies in disrespectful ways while not being aware of how it could reduce our chances of conceiving a baby in the future. I have teamed up with a fertility clinic in London to share some knowledge on fertility.  Hopefully that it will help those of you who want to learn a little more about your bodies and especially those who want to become a parent in the future.

Fertility treatment

Lots of couples nowadays are choosing to seek the support of fertility treatment such as IVF. This is because they are unable to conceive a baby naturally. In fact, as many as one in six couples experience issues with infertility. Of course many of us know that as a woman ages her fertility declines but fertility is not just an issue that women have to deal with, it also affects many men. Sperm quality declines with age in the same way that it does for a woman’s eggs.

Improving Your Lifestyle

For some patients, however, there are in fact things that can be done to improve the chances of successful conception. For instance, excessive exercise or dieting can prevent a woman’s menstrual cycle and therefore inhibit her chance of becoming pregnant. Smoking, drinking alcohol and eating unhealthy fat-filled foods can also harm the reproductive system for both men and women. You need to eat a nutritious, varied diet filled with vitamins and minerals. A short walk each day is also better than a sedentary lifestyle.

Speak To Your Doctor

There are many other factors that can lead to infertility.  But here may come a time when you have to seek expert advice. A medical professional will discuss your history and carry out a series of tests to try and identify the cause of the problem. It may be that you have an underlying health issue or scarring from a previous STI. Unfortunately a cause cannot always be found, but in cases where it can, fertility treatments will be suggested based on how suitable they are to your condition.

If you and your partner have been trying to conceive for a long time now with regular unprotected sex and no success, don’t be afraid to book an appointment with your GP to voice your concerns. Being able to talk about the issue is one of the first steps to finding a possible solution. You will be given adequate support and will not be judged.

You can also think about using an app to track your most fertile days.  Natural Cycles records your body temperature to see when your most likely to fall pregnant.
