So You Want To Build A Human? Review and Competition

I was very pleased with our latest book to review from Welbeck Publishing.  I am quite fortunate that my boys enjoy reading and educational titles like, So You Want To Build A Human? Are a real asset when home-schooling.

This is such an interesting human biology book. It includes some fascinating world records. Also despite being fairly in depth the layout and colourful illustrations make it an accessible read for most children. I had been relying on online sites to help with the boys learning and I was beginning to worry they were spending too much time on screens. It is worthwhile stocking up on books like this to support your child’s learning.

Handy Science Resource

We have been ticking off lots of Mathematics and English each day, but their science knowledge had been lacking.  Luckily So You Want To Build A Human? filled that gap rather nicely. I feel like the boys will be better prepared for when they go back to school now.

book review

The book explains how each part of the body works together, breaking it down into ten major body systems. Each page has a section with key information so you can quickly grasp the fundamentals for that particular body system.  We learnt lots of new things, like the burning we felt after our Joe Wicks workout was because our muscles were working so hard a chemical called lactic acid had built up and attacked our muscles! The ache we felt the day afterwards was our muscles trying to fix themselves again!

“A sneeze forces air out of the hose at a speed of about 160km per hour – that’s faster than a cheetah can run!”  and “the tongue has 5,000 taste buds”. Reading the book, you soon realize just how incredible the human body is.

The pee chart lets you know when you need to drink more. I had to stop writing briefly to re-hydrate. I made a point of drawing the boys attention to this as they only seem to develop a thirst at bedtime!!!

The included gigantic poster is a great way to recap the location of the organs. I think its nice to put educational posters up to make your own classroom. Children can with a quick glance refresh their knowledge.
