Week 28 of 2020: Bilberry picking and Crazy Golf
It seems like we have had a busier week than week 27. We have had a few more science experiments set from school to catch up on and my son needed to make a dreamcatcher. I don’t know if we will be set any more tasks next week. I guess I will find out tomorrow. Part of me is hoping we are done for summer. But at the same time least the science experiments keep the boys out of mischief. With the weather better we have also managed to have more walks as well, bilberry picking was a highlight.
Dreamcatcher
Bouncy Egg
We placed an egg in a jar of vinegar then left it for 72 hours. The vinegar causes a chemical reaction which dissolves the shell. The end result feels very rubbery just like a bouncy ball! But be warned this egg won’t bounce very high. So, if you want to test it out only drop from a very small height (1 to 2 inches).
Plastic From Milk
Put a cup full of milk in a pan and gently warm on the hob (do not boil). Then add four teaspoons of vinegar. Stir and you will see it get lumpy (and pretty gross according to my youngest!).
Then you put this “plastic” through a strainer. Dry off with some kitchen paper and then mould into shape. The vinegar separates the milk into curds and whey. The acid in the vinegar causes it to thicken. You might wonder why it is called plastic from milk experiment? I thought the very same, but basically, you’re making a substance similar to plastic. You can even add food colour or paint it!
Crazy Golf
We played crazy golf in the rain! But it was the most fun we had in a while. I think it was the novelty of actually doing something different, that wasn’t a walk or eating cake! I don’t think I would normally be so enthusiastic to do something outside in bad weather, but lockdown is making me appreciate things more!
Free Takeout
We were fortunate to get a free takeout from a local business as a thank you for supporting them in lockdown. It was much appreciated and a lovely gesture from them.
Bilberry Picking
Today we caught up with friends for another walk. We went bilberry picking to a favourite spot of theirs which was actually very enjoyable. It’s great when you can do an activity like fruit picking for free! Usually we pay for the privilege. Aside from the bilberry picking it was also a beautiful location to just soak up the scenery.
My husband is going to make a bilberry cheesecake next week, so will have to share a picture if it turns out okay.
It sounds like the school sets some really fun work to do. The dream catcher looks fab and making a bouncy egg is a lot of fun. We’ve done that before. Making plastic from milk is new to me though. How interesting. x

Fab experiments, as usual! I love bilberries, they are very popular in Russia, and grow in abundance in the North. I don’t think I’ve ever seen bilberries in this country, not even in food markets, only imported jars of bilberry jam. How wonderful to be able to go in the wilds and pick the berries!
The crazy golf looks fun.
I love playing crazy golf, we have not been this year yet but will do now the kids have broken up from school. The experiments looks fun, I have to admit that we have downed tools on that front

That was so kind of your local eaterie to offer free meals to the locals that have supported them during lockdown. That is how you repay the kindness, word gets out and more people visit them… kindness travels far and wide!
What an awesome week it was and so mnay awesome experiments! Have to admit the bouncy egg was fun until Liv dropped it from a greater height… donut!
