How To Organise Your Child’s Bedroom

Now the kids are back to school it’s the perfect time to organise your child’s bedroom. If your feeling overwhelmed just break it down into stages. Tackling all those toys, clothes and books can be a bit daunting otherwise. Children have a habit of personifying everything, even cute chocolate wrappers they feel they need to keep. I speak from experience!

Their bedroom can soon get out of control and they can lose sight of the floor. On top of that messy bedrooms can impact your sleep quality. Sleep is so important to make sure our children have better behaviour and attention spans in school and at home. So, if you keep putting off the plan to organise your child’s bedroom remember it does impact their mood and health.

Have A Clear Out

Have a look through their wardrobes and see what clothes no longer fit. Anything too small or garments they refuse to wear remove to donate to a charity shop or sell. I have had to look for kids clothes online as the shops have been closed and my eldest especially has had a growth spurt.  He is as tall as his dad now! If you’re not sure what to get rid of think about when they used it last, if it hasn’t been mentioned in over six months are they likely to really miss it?

Get The Children Involved

Whatever you do don’t make the mistake of not involving the children in the process. You want them to take responsibility for their own bedrooms going forward. You can help them get started but make sure they are still pitching in and helping. They might have been feeling just as overwhelmed as you were with the mess, but they didn’t know how best to tackle it. Once they know where to start, they will feel more confident to continue on their own.

Tidying Games

Make a game of tidying up specially to encourage younger children to want to clean their rooms. Put a timer on and see who has the tidiest bedroom afterwards. There are lots of different tidying up games you could try – anything to help coax them to tackle those messy rooms! It’s less of a battle when it’s seen as a fun game rather than an enforced chore.

If They Refuse To Help

If your children refuse to help tidy their rooms don’t jump in and do it for them. You want to empower them to do it themselves. Your job is to make sure they have adequate storage to store everything and a few pointers if they need assistance. As they get older, they need to be cracking on themselves. In that case you might have to away screen privileges until they organize their room. Once their rooms are tidy you can reinstate them straight away.

Storage

To help your child keep their room tidy make sure they have furniture with enough space to store their belongings away tidily. Spend a little time thinking about the bedroom design. Options you might want to consider are a storage bench, so they have somewhere to sit but also room to stow away toys! Underbed storage can work well too. With a little thought you can soon organise your child’s bedroom.
