There are lots of reasons to encourage an interest in trading card games. It can help your children with their social skills as they discuss the best cards and make swaps. They can fine-tune their negotiation skills making sure they always get a good trade. Plus, it can teach children the importance of looking after something. The cards need to be kept in a decent condition to hold value and be worthy of swapping.

So, you can now see why you would want them to get into trading card games. But what do you need to know next!

Be prepared for the cost

It can be an expensive hobby so look out for sales and offers. My youngest has quite a collection of Pokémon cards, which he occasionally adds to because he is after those rare cards that are worth the big money.  So far, I think he does have one individual card worth about £90 which I thought was quite a good find! It’s not just about the cards

My son took it quite seriously buying trading card sleeves and a folder to protect his cards. So don’t forget those extras to keep everything in a pristine condition. If they are looked after well, they can be very valuable and collectible. Plus, without folders the collection can get a bit messy! You can find it spread all over their bedrooms cluttering up the place. Therefore you soon realize its a hobby that is best undertaken with lots of organization. You can support their hobbies with encouragement as well as finances!

Teach Your Children Their Value

When it comes to swapping very early on you will want your children to understand the value of their trading cards. There is nothing worse than them building up an impressive collection and then swapping it all just because they thought a character card someone else had looked quirky or cool. Get them into the habit of checking on auction sites so they don’t trade anything valuable. Knowledge is power when it comes to Pokémon card swaps!

Now you have an idea what to expect, how do you get them started?

Buy a deck!

Start off by buying them their very first deck. Try and pick something that already interests them so they will be enthusiastic such as Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering or Yu-Gi-Oh!. Perhaps they already have Pokémon toys. Or you might find they already have friends that are into trading card games. In which case perhaps start off with the same ones so your children have a common interest.

Make Your Own

If you are feeling creative as a family you could make your own trading card game. Dig out the coloured pens and paper and have an entertaining afternoon coming up with your own characters. Think about their special powers and awesome stats, create an interesting backstory and then develop a list of rules. This activity might be what really gets your kids into trading card games.

Dig Out Your Old Trading Cards

Go and check in the attic and see if you have any old trading cards stored anywhere. It can be a helpful way to show your children how trading card games work before investing in newer collections. You just want to capture their interest and they might like the fact it was something you used to play as a child. Children see their parents as role models after all. Well until they are teenagers and look at you with contempt most of the time… (but that’s a blog post for another day!).
