Adopting a child can be an enormously rewarding and life-defining pursuit. If you’re adopting several children, then the rewards – and the challenges – might be even more substantial.

The adoption system aims to keep groups of siblings together, and to therefore encourage prospective adoptive parents to entertain the idea of adopting siblings. But why is this such a big deal, and why should would-be adopters be thinking about it?

Benefits for the children

Brothers and sisters are united by a unique kind of kinship. If those siblings have been through tough times together, as almost all children in this situation have, then this bond might have been made stronger than ever. Siblings care deeply for one another, and separating them can do enormous harm.

Legalities

All forms of adoption require a host of legal factors. In the case of siblings, the process can be even more complex. You might easily feel as though you’re being buried under a mountain of paperwork. But this feeling is usually due to a lack of familiarity with all of the steps required of you, and the arcane-sounding terminology and jargon. For this reason, it’s a good idea to get a competent family solicitor on your side as early as possible.

Support

If you adopt, then you can be reassured that you won’t simply be left to get on with it. There exists a wealth of support groups, training materials and specialised therapists there to help you get the ball rolling. You can also get financial support, which might be instrumental in getting nursery fees paid, getting everyone fed and clothed, and upsizing your car or home. It can be very expensive raising a child.

Process

Like other forms of adoption, adopting siblings involves a lengthy process. You’ll need to get yourself registered with a number of agencies, and then be matched with a group, before the children are finally brought into your home. The good news here is that, as we’ve mentioned, you’ll only need to go through the process once when you’re taking in siblings.
