Christmas

Finding Some Peace Amidst the Upcoming Holiday Rush

As December is preparing to unfold, everything becomes infused with the spirit of the holidays. Our kid’s eyes are getting bigger every morning, excitement crackles in the air, advent calendars are being emptied anticipatingly – waiting for that morning of the 25th. For us parents however, it more often than not translates to a hectic whirlwind of activities, responsibilities, and the pressure. As we try to create the perfect holiday experience for our families, rather than the focus on the joy we help to achieve. But in the midst of the chaos, it’s crucial for us to look at finding some peace, too, and maintain our well-being. How else are we supposed to power through things and enjoy ourselves as well? Here are some tips to help navigate the bustling month of December with a sense of calm.

Prioritise Selfcare, “Me Time”, and Family Time

It is incredibly easy to completely neglect your own well-being. More so when a family is involved, and especially when it comes to things like the Christmas period. In the rush to make the season magical for our children, it’s important to remember that taking time out of the day to just stop and take care of ourselves isn’t selfish – but a necessity. Schedule short breaks for activities that you enjoy; whether that is reading a book, talking a walk, or enjoying your favourite cup of Christmas tea. Taking care of your physical and mental heath will ultimately make you more present and energised for your family – a win-win. If you struggle with this, try intentionally scheduling moments of “me time” and also dedicated family time on your calendar. Because it’s easy to have too many tasks going on and forget about the actual quality time with your loved ones in the process. So how about a family game night? A cosy movie marathon? A foraging or scavenger hunt winter walk? All of which are great ways for finding some peace.

Simplify Holiday Traditions and Set Realistic Expectations

While it’s tempting wanting to create the perfect, social media worthy holiday – simplicity can be just as meaningful. Especially because for a lot of us, perfection really is the enemy of good. So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, why not scaling back on elaborate decorations and meals. Instead, focus on the traditions that matter most to your family and have a look and the ones, that add unnecessary stress. Let go of them! Embrace the idea that sometimes less is more, and the joy of the season doesn’t hinge on elaborate preparations. Understand that not every moment has to be picture-perfect, and it’s okay for things to go differently than planned. Flexibility and a sense of humour can go a long way in diffusing stressful situations!

Delegate Responsibilities

And most importantly: you don’t have to be the sole architect of holiday perfection. You’re not alone. Enlist the help of family members and delegate tasks to share the load. Play to each other’s strengths. No matter if it’s preparing a meal, wrapping gifts, or decorating the house. Involving others not only lightens your burden, but it also creates opportunities for shared experiences and bonding. My fondest Christmas memories as a child, for example, were me and my siblings being entirely responsible for decorating the house and Christmas tree – no parents involved! They instead always enjoyed some downtime on the couch.

Always remember, that the essence of the season lies in the joy of the shared moments, the warmth, cosiness, and togetherness – not in the pursuit of perfection. Give yourself time to breath, tackle one thing at a time, and enjoy the journey. Happy holidays!
