With two boys I don’t need to really worry about having the chat about periods.  I remember when I had my first one it was a bit of a shock.  I didn’t have a clue what was happening to me.  It was my 14^th birthday so I was much later starting than a lot of my friends.  But I was also quite naïve and clueless too.  I thought I was properly ill, I remember seeing blood was a real shock!  The next stage was completely overreacting thinking I was going to die!!!  Not the best starts with my birthday celebrations underway.  I was hiding in the toilet refusing to come out.

If you have a daughter I think its best to discuss the changes that will happen to her body.  It’s less frightening when you know what to expect.  You can prepare them in advice, give them some helpful tips and advice and soothe their worries.  Periods can start from around 10 years, so you might not want to leave off having that chat for too long.

Yes, I get that these kinds of chats can be a little embarrassing.  But don’t let it put you off attempting them.  I don’t recall my mum ever sitting me down to talk it all through.  I have already had the birds and the bees chat with my eldest, so I know how cringe worthy talking about these matters can be.  I am sure if I had a daughter periods would already be out in the open too.

Subscription Boxes for Periods

Some parents make quite a fuss of the first period.  You can now get subscription boxes for periods!  Filled to the brim of lovely pampering treats each month to make it all the more bearable.  I think as introductions to periods go there really couldn’t be a better one.  You can even add chocolate and painkillers to take the edge off.  I just love this one.

Discrete Protection

What I also remember about periods is worrying that everyone knew I was on.  I had sanitary towels that were so thick I swear people could see the tell-tale signs of it being my time of the month from a mile off.  Thankfully these days everything is so much more discrete.

I was having a look on the https://www.knixteen.com/ site (click here to see more) and saw you can even get special knickers that cope if you have an unexpected leak!  Yes, it seems periods are overall a lot less embarrassing than they used to me.  I never had anything fancy like that.

I am also grateful that the Bodyform rollerblading advert is over and done with.  Seriously I want to be tucked up in a blanket with a hot water bottle not getting up to anything like that!  But each to their own…
