Scrawl Review and Giveaway
We really enjoyed our last Big Potato Games review (Colour Brain). I was excited to see what Scrawl would be about. It is pitched as a game based on terrible drawings and ridiculous guesses. Based on my artistic ability I thought that would be pretty accurate. We had the 14+ edition which is more family friendly than the 17+ version. It still turned a little cheeky! Only because when you see someone’s drawing its so hard to hazard a guess at what they were aiming for!
Firstly, you each take a card, so you know what to draw. Luckily each one has a choice of four scenarios. You can select the one you think you have the best chance with! The scenarios did make me chuckle, some of them are pretty outlandish. You have things like “allergic to hugs” or “eye-wateringly strong pickles”. The only thing you can’t do is add any words to your scrawls.
When you have finished your drawing, you pass it on to the person next to you to make a guess at the scenario! Then it moves on to the next person to draw what they have written. It is quite entertaining seeing how far off scenario you get by the end of the round.
I had “Eyeball Golf” on my card. I thought I had done an excellent job drawing an eyeball, a golf club and the hole with the flagstick to guide my husband to the answer. Well he then thought my golf club was a leg! So, he guessed Eye, Leg Golf! So, it’s a game where you never know quite what might happen, even when you think your drawing is on the right track!
My husband did a drawing for “Trying to eat your toe” and my youngest thought it was a man eating a ghost! So, we did laugh a lot during our gaming session. To be fair I can see both a toe and the pac man ghost so I can see what they were both thinking!
How To Win
If someone manages to guess your exact scenario (and this is a lot harder than it sounds!), then you get awarded a juicy three points. You can also win a point if a player likes your drawing or guess over the others. The game can be over quite quickly if you keep impressing the players with your scrawls and comical guesses! It says the winner is the first to two points over the number of people playing, so in our case that would be the first to six points.
We have a similar game to this, but I think Scrawl will be getting more game time just because the scenarios are so much more humorous. I am tempted to get the 17+ Scrawl game for when we have grown-up friends over! I think it will be a witty game to introduce them too.

To me, a good board game needs to have some element of strategic thought and be fun to play, when younger players are playing a board game I think it’s good to have some aspect of learning whilst being great fun so they don’t notice.
This game looks great fun and I’m sure can engage a lot of imagination!

I’ve learned from having two very different children that a successful board game has to be fun for all age groups if you want to play it with the whole family. Save the hyper competitive games for older groups, specialist interests, team playing or other occasions
what do you think makes a good board game . . . well it has to be fun for a start, can be played at different levels ie kids can play on their own, or adults on their own, or kids / adults together.
A good board game should be strategic, fun, competitive, with no clear winner until the final scoring.
Something that can cross all the generations, that doesn’t go on too long and doesn’t require 45 mins on reading the rules. Something
like a mix of charades, general knowledge and maybe a humerous forfeit for getting something wrong.

I think a good board game, first of all, it has to suit the family who is playing. The suitability and age, easy to understand the rules, and the fun factor, what the winner will achieve or get out of winning.

simplicity, which means even the youngest can play, with this in mind speed to complete so boredom does not creep in

One that can be played by a few people or bigger groups. It should take less than an hour and not require too much planning and rule learning!
This game looks like a lot of fun. To me a good board game is one that can be played by all ages in the family. Leo who is 4 can’t read yet so he needs simple verbal instructions about what to do, while Daisy (aged 9) and Piper (12) want to dive in and play. The adults also want to get involved though so it can’t be too childish!

Big Potato Games really are leading the way in party games at present, they manage to mix fun, silliness and a little strategy in a way that appeals to gamers of all types.
Oh this sounds like so much fun! Can’t wait for my babies to grow to be able to play good family board games.
I love games like this, they’re not complicated and easy to store. This would be great to play with my oldest son.

After buying a lot of board games I’m finding the classics are the best. The rules are more simple and there’s not lots of battery-run parts which don’t work properly.

What makes a good board game depends on who your playing with. At home with the family a good board game is something that makes us laugh and keeps us entertained longer than 5 minutes. I also love playing games at home with friends and family while having a drink and what makes a good board game then is something competitive like cranium or something that is hilarious or a bit rude is always a winner.
It has to be something that doesn’t go on for too long with kids, it should be really interactive. It needs to be easy to follow as well.

I think a good board game is something which doesn’t make forever to set up (Mousetrap for instance), has endless rules and is a bit too complicated. One that the whole family can play, even if the little ones need a hand to start with, but they can eventually play by themselves. We have PayDay which isn’t hard and didn’t take long for my niece and nephew to learn how to play by themselves or even if I wanted to play with them. Thanks for the chance.
