Renovating Safely: What Workwear to Buy

Our house renovations are extensive and still ongoing.  I am not sure in what frame of mind we must have been in when we first saw and fell in love with this house.  I think we must have skimmed over its many faults because we were so desperate to call it home.  Blinded to its imperfections we just saw potential.  It’s been expensive and probably a little dangerous!  But we have finally bought the right equipment to safely complete projects like my son’s bedroom.  DIY is challenging enough as it is so do make your life easier with the correct workwear for the job.

What Workwear Essentials to Buy

Footwear

workwear

Purchasing sturdy footwear is a priority.  Trust me as someone who has dropped heavy tools on to my feet before now.  Sandals are not a wise choice unless you’re a fan of pain!  If you are going to be working outside, make sure they are water resistant.  There is nothing worse than being cold and miserable on top of working hard outside.

Make sure you choose safe footwear that is also comfortable to wear for any length of time.  Safety trainers are an excellent choice as you have the comfort of a trainer but lots of added protection.  Look for shoes with steel toes caps and lots of durability.

Safety Glasses

Renovation work can be very dusty with lots of falling debris to avoid damaging your eyes always have a pair of safety goggles to hand.  Your eye sight is too valuable to leave unprotected.  My husband learnt this the hard way when he got little particles in his eye.  It wasn’t any fun for him I can tell you!

Work Overalls

Companies like Engelbert Strauss have developed flexible stretch materials so your work overalls can be comfortable and practical.  You still have the freedom of movement you need to complete any project whilst still getting the protection that allows you to work in extreme conditions.  Look out for details like reinforced kneepads which can stop the discomfort on your knees and well placed pockets for carrying tools.

Dust Mask

As an asthmatic who has got very poorly before forgetting to use one of these I can’t emphasize their importance!  You must keep your airways dust free or risk getting very ill indeed.

Ear Defenders

Some projects are very noisy, so I would say to pick up a pair of these.  They aren’t vert expensive so no excuses not to offer your poor ears some protection.

Hopefully that covers the main essentials but do let me know if I have missed anything!  Good luck with your next project.
