There are an abundance of career options in the science industry.  Which is why many parents hope to foster a passion for this subject within their children. We all want the best for our kids and there will come a time when we have to let them make their own decisions with regards to the subjects they study and the career routes they take. However, it doesn’t hurt to help them find an interest in science from a young age. Here’s some advice on how to raise a science lover from an independent, co-educational school in Kent.

Make Time To Discuss Science

Science is all around us.  So the sooner our children learn this the better. With that in mind, it should be fairly easy to incorporate science into the home.  Thus ensuring it is something that is discussed as a family on a regular basis. Dinner time is a fantastic opportunity to discuss science–related topics, such as current severe weather conditions or a medical breakthrough that has been in the news. The more you talk about science in a casual way, the more normal it will feel for your children.

Encourage Questions

When you’re out and about, try and encourage your children to ask lots of questions. For instance, if you’re driving in the car, you could discuss the car’s mechanisms and how it works. Alternatively, if you are taking a stroll through the woods, you could discuss various aspects of nature. Be sure to praise your son or daughter if they ask you questions and demonstrate curiosity, because it shows willingness to learn.  Doing this will go a big step towards raising a science lover.

Talk To Their Teacher

It might be worth arranging a meeting with your child’s teacher so that you can discuss the curriculum and find out a little more about what they’re learning in class. The more you know about the lesson plans, the easier it will be for you to incorporate such topics in your family activities, so that you can engage your child as much as possible. It is likely that your child’s teacher will be thrilled to hear from you so that you can work together to achieve your mutual goal.
