Mölkky Review and Giveaway
We have so many board games to play indoors. However outdoors games are something in short supply here. So, we were all delighted to be sent Mölkky from Tactic to review. I think its important to find fun ways to encourage children outside. Playing outdoors helps build immunity and increases levels of happiness. But sometimes children need the excitement of an entertaining game to coax them out the door and away from their consoles!
Throwing Game
Mölkky a Finnish throwing game originally created back in 1996, it is now available to buy from Phillips Toys for £19.99. I think it is a reasonable price as the pieces are very sturdy and well made. The game is simple to set up. You put the skittles in formation and then throw a wooden baton (called the throwing skittle) to try and knock them down. I like that its not a complicated game to get started. My boys can get bored if a game has a big instruction booklet to digest.
Although the game is simple to understand and dive into, it is not as easy as just knocking down as many skittles as you can like with bowling. Here you have to think strategically. If you knock down one skittle you get to keep the score on that skittle, they are numbered 1 through to 12. But if you knock more than one skittle over you instead score how many you knocked down. It needs to be lying down on the floor not just leaning slightly out of formation to count.
You need to reach exactly 50 points to win. If you manage to go over 50 points, your score is then halved, and gameplay continues. So, a game can last quite some time if your aim is a bit off like mine! However, if you manage to miss the skittles three times in a row your out of the game! So precision and a bit of skill will help you go far in this game. Spot the baton flying threw the air below!
My eldest son thought it was a very enjoyable game and I would definitely agree. It is a game suitable for all the family. The baton you throw is very light weight so even the youngest members of the family will have no issues joining in.

I’ve never heard of this game before, but it sounds like fun. I like that you don’t need a perfectly manicured lawn (as you do for croquet) or lots of space (for badminton, football etc.). as it can be played in quite a small garden.
