I have teamed up with Asmodee to giveaway Ticket to Ride Europe from Days of Wonder. It is a standalone game, so you don’t need to worry about having any of the other games.

We have enjoyed playing the original game many times over the years. However, I have always wondered how this version would differ. I thought perhaps it would be the same game concept but just with different places on the board. How wrong was I! The game actually has quite a few new features which I really liked.

It has everything we loved about the original plus you have the addition of ferries, tunnels and stations. Those three exciting additions really enrich gameplay. So, if you have the original game definitely considering buying Ticket to Ride Europe so you can make the most of the new features.

Ferries

You need to use the locomotive cards (the multi-coloured train cards) when you see them marked on the ferry routes. This makes it a little tricker to complete.

Tunnels

These are easy to identify on the board with their unique tunnel marks. Claiming a tunnel is no simple matter. You collect the colours you need for your tunnel and everything seems fine and dandy! That is until you then have to take three extra cards from the train draw pile. Depending on what you reveal will dictate what you can do next.

If you reveal train cards with the colour you want to use or a locomotive (multicoloured train card) then that route will cost you whatever you had already PLUS up to three extra train cards. Although you can be lucky with the train draw pile and get completely different colours in that case the route will only cost what you originally planned for.

I like the element of luck the tunnels provide. It probably pays to be cautious and have a few extra-coloured cards ready just in case your route costs you more than you hoped. If you don’t have enough of that colour, then your turn ends. Which can be quite frustrating but adds to the difficulty of the game.

Train Stations

The train stations are very clever they allow you to use one of the routes of another player. This is really useful as the board can get very busy when all five players are in play. Having a train station hopefully means you can get your route complete without having to do a crazy long diversion to try and find a way to finish it. Or risk taking a penalty at the end because you didn’t manage to complete a destination card. As train stations can make life a bit easier if you don’t use them you get an extra four points per unused station at the end of the game.

You can have up to three train stations in play and they get progressively more expensive to place. The first costs one train card, the second two of the same-coloured train cards and the third three of the same-coloured train cards. You can place one station per turn.
