We were sent a marvellous bundle of Welbeck Publishing educational titles. They have really helped support our home-schooling efforts. I always schedule some free reading time into each day, so having educational titles like these means they learn so much.
The Amazing Recycling Project Book (£8.99)
If you want to work on some craft projects with your children, I highly recommend this title by Sara Stanford. There are so many incredible things you can make with your recycling. Flicking through the book you will feel truly inspired. It is quite something to see an egg box turned into a fire engine or an adorable little crab! Each page has lovely pictures and easy to follow instructions.
It’s good you don’t need many extra things other than your recycling. Just stock up on the basics, pipe cleaners, googly eyes and paint. The book has projects to please children of all ages, they can make robots, vehicles, musical instruments, and buildings. Lots of the creations mean further play after they have been finished. I think my favourite is the puppet theatre, children can even make their own character using wooden spoons.
The book even has a section where you can design your own ideas. I think it is great it encourages children to use their own imagination too.
Weird Weather & Changing Climates £8.99
This book introduces children to the subject of climate change and global warming. It is a good idea to educate our children on this topic. After all they are the future of the planet. The book has plenty of tips to reduce your carbon footprint, encouraging children to reuse and recycle.
This book is very useful for home-schooling geography. It is jam packed with activities children can try including a beach clean-up! I love that there are questions to test their knowledge, so you know it’s all sinking in!
My eldest is missing his geography lessons so this book is a handy resource. Fortunately, Weird Weather & Changing Climates has lots of facts to impart about extreme weather, the water cycle, and a greener future.
Living Planet £12.99
This book has augmented reality pages which bring the information to life with full-motion videos. Living Planet covers life from the very beginning and continues with the complete story of life on Earth. I found this to be such an educational book, it touches on evolution, climate and weather, life cycles, habitats, and the impact of people on the planet. We found it interesting to see what we can do to help our planet. Plus, the full-motion videos show some fascinating things like a volcano erupting.
Living Planet has lots of pictures and the text is very engaging, perfectly tailored to key stage 2 children (7+) and older.
The Story of Titanic For Children £8.99
This Welbeck Publishing title is full of photos and astonishing facts documenting the heart-breaking tale of the “unsinkable ship”. Everything you ever needed to know about this famous ship is covered in these pages. It has been over a hundred years since the Titanic sank but it’s a story that still captivates people, from the tragic losses of 1,517 lives to the stories of survival. It is a story we will never forget.
The Titanic was a revelation for its time. It cost a fortune to build and no expense was spared. It was an enormous ship, 269.1m long. The book covers everything from building the ship, manning it, powering the Titanic and details the luxury afforded to the first-class customers on the ship. In third class there were two bathtubs for 700 passengers. It was a stark contrast to the extravagance of first class. But these people mainly had one aim to start a better lift in America.
There are so many remarkable people involved in the story of the Titanic. Those who stayed on to help others, the band which continued to play and a priest who prayed for the passengers after turning down a place on a lifeboat.
The Story of the First World War for Children £9.99
This book is full of facts, photos and documents from the First World War. It covers everything you would need to know about the conflict in bite sized sections that children 7+ can digest. It starts with how it begun moving on to the various battles, life in the trenches, the artillery pieces of that time, the deadly weapon poison gas and the role of different countries during the war. There is a section about the animals who risked their lives in the war, dogs, carrier pigeons, camels and war horses. I think it is an absorbing read and one that really pulls on your heartstrings.
The legacy of the war page mentions remembrance day poppies. I didn’t realize that they were chosen as they are one of the few plants that would grow on the churned up battlefields. It finishes with the art of war. You can then discuss with your children about propaganda and the war effort. We found it to be a very thorough well researched read that will be a real asset when home-schooling your children.
The Holocaust A History For Children £9.99
I knew this might be a difficult Welbeck Publishing book for my children to read, starting with the persecution of the Jews, burning books, a loss of civil rights, and losing their jobs and businesses. Building up to the ghettos, the concentration camps and the death squads. It is heartbreaking to think that 1,500,000 children died during the holocaust. But there were so many heroes that helped in those dark times. People like Nicholas Winton who organised the rescue of 669 children and Oskar Schindler who saved over 1200 Jewish lives by setting up his own subcamp to protect them. The fact that there were people doing good and taking huge risks to save lives shows the good in the world and that needs to be remembered.

The Holocaust and First World War books would be the most interesting for my family as we have been learning about these sorts of things since the VE Day anniversary
we would love the recycling project as we love creating arty things from left overs

Weird Weather & Changing Climates – we have been talking about this subject lots lately after a mini heat wave to hailstones within a few days!
I would say having had the VE day anniversary and a topic to talk about with the family at the time, the Holocaust and World War books would be lovely to have.
After a family discussion my two daughters said they’d choose the Titanic book.
Weird Weather and the Titanic books as they are both things that my son has previously shown an interest in.
The Holocaust for Children should be compulsory reading.
The titanic as my sons project is the titanic at school just now!
Living Planet as it touches on evolution, climate and weather.
I think we would enjoy the Titanic book the most and also the weather one would be interting
They all look amazing and I would use them all as I home educate but if I had to pick one I think the weird weather one would definitely spark interest for my children

The Amazing Recycling Project Book would be enjoyed and appreciated. As my Mum, as we grew up had a number of friends and acquaintances that we kept / collected and Mum passed on to them. For the items to be re – used. Waste was against their cultures / philosophy/ ies. Don’t know where that came from. Having now seen some Historical BBC programmes :- Perhaps this passed down previous generations. Then, just how did communities / society become ‘a throw away society ‘? Maybe smaller families, children not having to wait, share, etc :- As not having to learn to cooperate, negotiate with a sibling or siblings.
When I shared a flat with other (in my younger years). One flatmate had a friend who worked in a private (fee paying) children’s Nursery. We saved / collected cardboard in the form of inners from toilet roll (once toilet roll finished with), inners from kitchen roll, cereal boxes. All these once finished with were passed on, and made use of within the private Children ‘s Nursery.
Blue Peter :- Television programme some of us grew up with. There were projects / collections of used items. Such as silver top from milk bottle. These benefited Charity. Viewers who participated were regularly updated by programme in regards to how well the project was going. How the Charity had benefited. Viewers were thanked for their participation, assistance, help, positive outcome. Endorphins :- ‘ Feel Good ‘ Hormones we likely received by the tv programme staff / presenters. ” Happy Days “, ” Good Old Days “.
Often feel like we shouldn’t waste anything. As there are some who do not have, or do not have much. Also brought up to “do well “, ” be good ” / considerate of others. Seems Charities made much of everything it could in the past. Can ring pulls went towards funding Kidney Machines. ” Good Old Days “.
I think the story of the Titanic would be a firm favourite with my grandchildren

A very relevant topic :- As weather happens, and understanding what influences the variety of weather we experience. Also how to aim to predict type/s of weather in advance. Weather forecasts, etc.

The Holocaust A History for Children. History we all need to know about and remember. Evil. Evil, hatred, etc still exists in the world. Despite the knowledge and encouragement of ” Equality and Diversity “.
Seems that the holocaust is a topic taught and likely discussed at school lessons. In my own school years :- Peace was encouraged through church , chapel, at home school assemblies, etc. So when it came to history as a topic in school :- Seemed mainly wars, when for years Peace had been instilled into me and my peers. I had a block (not interested in war, had been told we wanted Peace, Pray for Peace, “Peace be with you ” offered to neighbours, etc within church congregations, offer Peace.) need Interested in war /s. Thank goodness :- Agricultural Revolution was covered within history, at least something practical, sensible, useful for people, etc was what I thought.
Curriculum for Excellence nowadays. Possibly a much broader education. Hopefully means more Opportunities for youngsters on leaving school, and commencing employment hopefully. As shout that not be the aim of school :- To prepare for adulthood, and working life. We need tradespeople, builders, nurses, doctors, midwives, teachers, drivers, shop workers, frontline staff, chemists, scientists, researchers, etc, etc.
Should read :- Not Interested in war/s.
No wonder, had been encouraged Peace :- At his, in school, within faith, at church, chapel, school assemblies. Then years later in secondary school :- Expected to listen and learn about war/s. I switched off, not interested. As against the Philosophy I had been brought up with, almost bathed in. I could not understand why adults where doing this to me and others. Seemed ‘to go against the grain ‘.
Perhaps nowadays with Curriculum for Excellence :- Children can learn, and excell in what interests them, what may be useful to them in every day life, what prepares them for their future :- Adult like, working life, etc. As exam results can impact on future opportunities in life. Therefore the Education system, as well as others :- surely, ” Should be Fit for Purpose “.
